I guess Jim Larranaga has his ticket to fame punched too.
Jim Larranaga has taken another team to the Final Four after getting George Mason to at least the Sweet 16 three times? Also, George Mason had the worst winning percentage in D-I in the decade before Larranaga took over? If so, the answer is yes. If not, Larranaga is Bob Weinhauer.

First you say Cal taking UMASS to the final four made him a legend. But now it takes a bit more I guess.

Look, Cal should be the number 1 target of any search committee. And while Memphis has a strong basketball tradition, UK is a much better program to build your legacy as a coach.

He has no need to build a legacy. He's already done that.

Not sure he can bring thugs and 1&Done's to Kentucky like he could at Memphis.

What is there to do in Lexington but drink & watch the grass grow?

Memphis has an active nightlife.

As badly as I despise that horrid blue that permeates everything in the city, I am going to suggest that the lifestyle in Lexington compares more favorably to that in Memphis than you believe.

I've never found a shortage of ways to get myself in trouble in Lexington.

I would assume that it is a pretty damn good life being John Calipari. He can take full credit for what Memphis basketball is right now. He is getting paid and seems to enjoy Memphis. I don't think he is going anywhere unless he is just bored, which is unlikely without a championship. At this point, he has a much better chance of winning a title with his recruiting class coming in at Memphis than he would at Kentucky.

This is true. Though sometimes you have to look harder for it in Lexington. There are parts of Memphis you can pretty much just look at and get in trouble. I go down there for the blues/barbeque festivals from time to time. Wild times.

Though I suppose the lexington white collar gated communities along the horse farms might be a little more visually soothing.

Im trying to understand this. I understand the one and done part, but it's the "thug" part im having trouble with. Who on this team is a thug? Please, help me out on this.

Didn't someone on the team hit their girlfriend with a crowbar a couple years back? Or was that on the football team?

Among people who know basketball, making the Final Four at a wasteland like UMASS makes him a legend and ensures his induction into Springfield and Kansas City.

I agree. Cal is already a legend. He has resurrected a once proud program to the next level of National prominence.

Only job he would leave Memphis for is KU, not UK.

1) My sense is that he thinks he can succeed no matter where he coaches (and he probably could).

2) Would you rather be King of the city of Memphis or King of the state of Kentucky?

Cantucky is a has been washed up piece of history . It took Cal 3 or 4 years to get Memphis where they are , CBG got 2 and was canned .What would any of you do . Tell the truth please.:ermm:

I'd honestly stay at Memphis with, most likely, the top 3 players in the country coming in, and a decent set of role players.

Kentucky could lose Orton, Meeks, and Patterson, which would leave them with a ton of scrubs, and basically a 2 year contract unless you somehow pull off a miracle.

So after two years the great Gillispie is leaving the Cats with a bunch of scrubs? Surely you kid.

Not a surprise from a person with your screen name who believes that Kansas is the most hated team by Memphis fans.

Cal could concievably become the all time winningest college coach if he stayed at Memphis. 30 games a year. Yeah, he could do it.

Yup because there is no other than team in C-USA capable of building a talented team to compete against Memphis.

In 5 years Memphis will have the most players in the NBA.

Memphis is the school of 1 & Done's or 2 & Through's.

no he couldn't. He wouldn't even come close. He's barely halfway there now.

he needs about 300 more wins just to catch Calhoun and Boeheim and about 375 more to catch Krzyzewski.

Word in recent years was the only college jobs Cal would leave Memphis for were KU and Pitt, as both were places deemed as "going home." A move to Pitt would be a step back when comparing their pedigree to Memphis'.

If you don't believe me about Memphis fans hating KU, just ask them. Ask them how they like our trophy being in Lawrence.

Hat could probably say with a little more confidence but I am pretty sure Pitt is out when they overlooked him for Dixon the last time around.

As for Memphis fans hating KU....

Memphis choked it away, why hate Kansas for that? Blame Cal and the players for the last 2:12 if you want to get mad at anyone. I don't know too many Memphis fans that hate Kansas solely from the championship game last year.

For what it is worth looks like Calipari might want to go to UK.

I (matt Jones) just spoke with someone who is likely one of the two closest sources I have in this process. He tells me two things. First, Calipari has strongly expressed interest to the Kentucky folks and that he wants to meet with the UK brass. In addition, he told me that many at UK are warming to the thought of Calipari and that part of the reason has to do with the comments down the road. There is a feeling from some that Pitino had a role in Donovan’s initial decision to turn down the job a few days ago and that there is a sentiment that getting Calipari would mean getting a Coach who is “committed to owning this state.”

The individual told me that if he were a betting man, the list right now looks like this:

1. Calipari
2. Izzo
3. Barnes/Matta/Miller

Should be interesting…..

Judging by what MSU just did to Louisville, Izzo should be on top of that list if they want someone who will own the state.
