Chris Dortch, who puts together the Blue Ribbon Yearbook, described John Fields as Pearl's first legitimate shot blocker.

He doesn't seem to think Fields is much of an offensive threat, but went on to say he should help shore up Tennessee's defense next season.

Thoughts?

Dortch was sure talking him up on the radio today. Chris knows his stuff, so this is a good sign. Shot blocking is generally a skill that will translate as a player moves up levels. When guys who block a bunch of shots in small conferences play against the big boys, they usually swat their fair share.

We can only hope so. That, plus some rebounding and toughness around the basket would do us a lot of good!

Hey, I'm fine with John Fields coming here and getting some minutes. No Woolridge at 4 is good for me.

Shot blocker is certainly what he's been advertised as since he's gotten here. Glad to hear the good news.

I guess my emphasis is on the word 'legitimate'. I think there are some strong differing opinions on whether this kid can contribute on the SEC level.

I don't think it really matters if he's slinging shots in the stands. I'd rather have someone that plays solid post defense and rebounds. From everything we hear, he is probably capable of doing that.

SEC level? Did you mean Kentucky's level?

gear up for our Final Four run... I can see it

We Wish but that's all they will be is wishes. No Way. With so much youth we will probably be one of those teams that's a 3-6 seed that gets upset in first round of tourney by an senior laden MID-Major.

Fields set the school record at UNC Wilmington (if I remember correctly).....averaging 2.0375 blocks per game for his career (163 blocks in 80 games)

I don't see why he wouldn't be able to contribute on D

Apparently mtt2d has veto authority with the NCAA's reprimanding capability and is a true asset to VN

Yeah, I'd just like to see the NCAA try to ban us from the post season. AI'm sure he would not allow that to happen.

He might even have the power to retract Bruce's initial interview all together. We are so lucky to have him on board. He is probably deserving of his own thread at this point. I can see the myth, the legend that is mtt2d attaining Rod Wilks-like status any moment

note: Sorry Mr. Wilks, please be kind

Let's just have him do away with this entire mess. How dare the NCAA investigate us in the first place. Recruiting is hard and exceeding contact limits should be expected. Let's have him move away from the lying aspect completely as sometimes you just have to lie to folks. Not intentional, of course.
