It's different now with giant, high def home TV, but there was a time when listening to John Ward call a game was the next best thing to being there.

Used to listen to him while we were working on the farm. There was no better in all of college sports, period! Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell were great too but none better than John Ward. 5,4,3,2,1 give him six!

as a kid,we would watch on TV,but John Ward was the sound...

I remember my dad doing that as a kid. It wasn't until I was in my teens that I truly understood why. By then I only had a few years left to enjoy it before he retired.

In 2000 I got to sit in the sky box one game. John Ward sat next to me. We were divided by a sheet of glass but I can always say I sat with him at a game.

I listened to him in the 60s 70s and 80s. Nothing better than listening to John Ward on the radio with my dad. Ward was the best, there will never be another one like him!

Miracle at South Bend is my favorite John Ward call.

That was his greatest miss-call.

Loved that game. Saw it on the armed forces network in Naples Italy. Had to watch it on the mess deck. There was probably over a hundred of us and only two Tennessee fans. I took he11 that first half. At the end I was standing on a table giving it to everybody. Singing Rocky Top and I might of even used some of the more colorfull language the Navy taught me.

By far my best Vol memory...not in Neyland.

my favorite calls:

mose phillips TD run against south carolina in 1992. "phillips! running through, over, around and underneath defenders of south carolina...."

fourth down stop against auburn in 1998. "no....No.....NO....NO!!! they stuffed him!!"

Believe me, brother, we feel your pain. These old school guys will never be replaced. Larry Munson is a legend in GA. Now most folks don't know who Scott Howard is. And he's pretty good.

John's ability to describe the action is unmatched anywhere. One of my favorites was a Georgia game in 97 where Jamaal Lewis picked up a 3rd and very long. John said 1st down Jamaal Lewis and THEN SOME! He picked up about 35 yards on the play needed 17. I show my speech class the Voice video every year.

Ward is a class act. About 6 years ago had a chace to meet and talk to the man over on the practice field on fan day just before the orange and white game. I spot him over on the baseball field side against the overgrown fence, so I walk over and introduce myself shake his hand. He offers to take a picture with me and my nephew. My nephew takes about 6 pictures with my camera, hey I wanted to make sure I gotta good one. So I go to take my nephews picture and my camera freezes,. To shorten the story my nephew ends up getting an autograhed 11 by 14" personally autographed picture sent to him. I don't know who got the best deal that day. But both of us are still grinning over the days events. Until we remember we both got kiffin's autograph that day.
