In 1994 Shane Burton blocked a punt against Mississippi st. He scooped it up at the 4 and walked in for a TD. That call by ward was priceless. He said something like.... He lumbers to the three and waddles to the two... Etc. Back then WIVK the frog played back ward calls from the last game. I heard it then and busted a gut! Burton is a friend and we gave him junk for a long long time! Fun times!!!

I had a class with Shane in the Glocker Bldg and he had to duck just to get through the door. Big man. Great player.

John Ward was the best I ever heard. Here's the 5 best play by play College football game callers(IMO) that I ever heard

John Ward
Jim Fyffe(Auburn)
Al Ceraldo(Georgia Tech)
Jack Kristol(Mississippi State)
Mick Hubert(Florida)

I'll get killed for this, but I'd have to put Larry Munson on the list. Yeah, he was an insane homer, but his big play calls were as good as it gets.

Ward was definitely one of the most professional sounding announcers I can remember.

My worst SEC play by play guys are

Eli Gold(Alabama)
Jim Hawthorne(LSU)
Bob Kesling
Scott Howard(Georgia)
Tom Leach(Kentucky)

Kesling and Howard will never be viewed as much of anything special because of who they followed.

...and this list indicates that you've never heard a South Carolina radio broadcast. Todd Ellis sounds like a bad wrestling announcer.

I'll have to listen to the USC opener in August online to take in how bad Todd Ellis is supposed to be.

Jack Cristil was really good.

I love the story about Jack Cristil calling the 1998 SEC Championship Game when a call went against the Bulldogs and he reached up and flipped a bird towards the field and never missed a beat on his call of the game on the Miss State network.

My favorite call was Jeff Hall's game winning field goal against Georgia in 1995.

"The crowd will tell you....GOOOODDDUHH!"
