John Ward

I don't really mind Kessling all that much. Although if you ever listen to him when you're in the stadium, you sometimes wonder what he's watching.

Ward was the same way though. My Dad used to call him "Mr. 5 Second Delay".

JW just had a way of calling the games that made me feel like I was watching it. I listened to many a game while sitting in a tree stand and never felt like I was missing much by not seeing it. Kesling just doesn't have that same feel.

Anytime a UT game was on TV, I'd hit the 'Mute' button and crank up the radio just to hear JW.

I've never met him, but I do have an interesting factoid connecting us: I was the final caller ever on the Kickoff Call-In Show during JW's reign (UT-FSU NC game). I correctly answered the trivia question, then wished JW and BA well.

Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee recently ordered all state flags lowered to half-mast in memory of the recently-departed "Voice of the Hogs". Can't think of his name right now. If the same honor is not ordered for JW (hopefully not anytime soon), it would be a serious injustice. :nono:

Bob Kessling may be a nice guy, but he's so bland
I think Kessling was so used to calling the play-by-play for TV (Jefferson-Pilot) for so long, he doesn't really know how to call a good game for the radio. Doing play-by-play for radio is a lot harder than for TV. That's all John Ward did his entire career - he was one of the best. He called a great basktball game, too. He didn't need a color commentator.
