It would definitely be the same type of chance we took with CDD, although he does at least have coordinator experience.

Still not worth taking a chance on IMO.

The coordinator experience would be the only plus in hiring Smart..He would still be considered "a coach learning on the job", and that's definitely not what we need.:twocents:

We need Gruden!

To answer your question, maybe he's on some lists b/c he is the "safe" hire.

If what wer'e hearing is true, then we won't make that far down the list any way.

Are you sayin that Gruden is #1 on the list or is it someone else? If your teasen I'm gonna hold a dog treat above your head!

It appears that he is #1 on my list of coaches that I would to become UT's coach.

I see Strong on some lists. I really don't get it. I like your first four. Do people say strong because they think UT will not go for the big name?

There has been a "buzz" about Strong since the Ky loss and has been in conversations with every UT guy I know when the subject arises. I want Gruden, and tifwiw, but no one within the program I know have brought up his name. Not that they would to me as most I know are either players that do not know anything about it and through my business friendships but not any decision makers. I did hear the name Dooley from one of them three days before it was reported he was the hire. The same guy told me Lane Kiffin was probably the guy and played golf with Hammy and others the weekend after Fulmer was fired. I think it is because first, Smart would take the job for what we could afford to pay given Dooleys buyout and almost 100% would take the job. I think that's why you hear his name a lot, he's not a "splash hire" but would have to be near the top of the list outside the big names tossed around.

We all want a winner. But Gruden isn't a proven college HC and it would be foolish to throw Saban money just to get him even if we could afford it. He'd make a splash that much is true, however can he recruit like great college coaches? Can he develop talent from high school kids? The other question is exactly how good of a coach is he really. He won a SB yet that was early in TB with a team handed to him. Later on he seemed to fizzle out by slowly going down the drain. The up side to his energy is that in college players are only there for 4-5 years and don't get worn down by that type of style. I still can't buy into the fact he'd be the great college HC many on here think he'd be.

I say we pay Gruden a good chunk of money. Not a Saban and Bama type contract when they brought him in, but something really solid. And offer to possibly by out his ESPN contract if we can afford it.

We need to stop being cheap...and stop going after young on the rise coaches. I dont care if he is young but he better show he can coach, recruit, and have a solid strategy. Would not mind hiring a Coach C Martin of Football.
