Jonathan Crompton critiques TN’s offense

He might be held in higher regard if he didn’t come in so heavily associated with Heath. He couldn’t live up to that standard. Very few UT QBs have come close.

That makes sense. What I gathered from the video was Nico is being made to play differently than what comes natural to him. Crompton eluded to that is what he went through, also - even though his passing struggles were undeniable.

I wonder about coaches protecting players though. Why is it that guys like Hendon Hooker are allowed to run at will and guys like Nico are coached out of it? Was it due to Hendon’s knee injury that Coach Heupel has Nico sitting in the pocket, while edge rushers run wide? Nico moves gracefully, except the sliding part. Maybe when Heupel trusts Nico’s vision and decision making, taking off will be on the table.

Sports Talk J mentioned yesterday in his stream that a player can get injured in the pocket just as easily as on the run. I agree with that assessment, especially with the current blind side protection. My thought is let him run enough that the defense keeps a spy and one less rusher. It would only take a handful of gains to make the defense have to play differently against the pass.

You know how people who don't do a thing well tend to be the biggest critics of that thing (think movies, music, etc)? This is kind of the same thing.

It's a difference between a scrambling QB and a QB that can run when need be. Surely you understand that

I get you now. I agree with you there and I didn’t mean he should be a run first kind of guy. We don’t have Lamar Jackson. We have an athletic passer like Hendon Hooker prior to injury.

For those of you to young to know who Compton was, he was absolutely terrible. He had a decent season his senior year.

He didn’t meet our hopes. He did spend a year under David Cutcliff and another under Lane Kiffin. He also got to play with Tom Brady for a brief stint. He has had some really brilliant people to learn from, regardless of his performance.

To put that in perspective: Most top paid college coaches don’t have a great college football career. Our head coach and Steve Spurrier are a few exceptions. Personal performance is irrelevant to teaching. Peyton Manning, one of the most brilliant players ever, has stated multiple times that he doesn’t feel like he would make a good coach.

I’m not putting words into your mouth. You did not say any of that, but some others have implied that to be the case.

He should be running more in my opinion
But that on Nico as well as the coaches. Are they telling him to run, not to run.

I think that’s what we need someone on the inside to answer. We really don’t know why he isn’t taking off when the pocket breaks down. Maybe he’s not handling the pressure well enough.

Some terrible qbs go on to be great coaches or analysts. Crompton’s biggest issue was he couldnt understand what he was supposed be doing. Just not a real cerebral qb.

Is being drafted to the NFL
And then playing in the CFL supposed to be bad?
Only to those who are clueless and have **** talked collegiate athletes over the years.

I will never understand how guys that poured their heart and soul into this team can still be reviled decades later.

Former tight end Jacob Warren said Oklahoma and Arkansas both having lots of familiarity with our offense through their coaches and our former players threw wrinkles at Nico he was not prepared for. I think there’s lot of truth in that. Josh has taught this offense to a lot of people. Apparently it’s time to come up with some new wrinkles of his own. Hopefully Florida hasn't got much of an inside scoop on us yet. I agree with everybody that says turn the boy loose and let him run ! That’s what’s lacking. In my humble opinion.

I’ve listened to him a bit as well. He’s probably the best resource we have available since he’s one year removed from the team.
