Jones expects bowl game for Vols

Tennessee football coach Butch Jones all but promised that the Vols would play in a bowl game this season during his speech Tuesday at a Rotary Club of Knoxville meeting.

Jones, speaking to a ballroom full of fans, slipped his guarantee of a bowl appearance into his response to a question about Tennessee's academic status, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel, a 247Sports partner.

"When we go to a bowl game this year," Jones said, according to the News Sentinel, "we will have 14 college graduates on this year's team performing. That will be the most in the country."

Another fan then asked which bowl game Tennessee would be playing in this season.

"Right now I'm not picky," Jones said. "I just want to go to a bowl game."

The Vols, who went 5-7 last year in their first season under Jones, haven't appeared in a bowl game since their Music City Bowl loss to North Carolina in 2010 under then-coach Derek Dooley.

Confidence. I like it.

I felt like he alluded to this during his interview on the Tenn Preview show last night as well. I think he's pretty confident in this team. He said if they stay focused they will like the end result this year.

I think we are all expecting one too - and I think if the team does that, even a toilet bowl, we will have soundly met expectations and developed a platform for growth. If they actually exceed that mark and end up with 7-8 reg wins, truly wild times are ahead and it will be hard to overestimate the wild eyed exuberance that will be here on VN

He's either really confident in the freshmen or he knows something we don't know about one or two teams on the schedule (likely Missouri and Florida being very beatable based on matchups).

Not really. There is a fairly significant contingent here saying they expect on 5 wins again and that Jones will have met expectations if UT goes 5-7 this fall.

I think those of us expecting a bowl game are more in agreement with Jones than those expecting another 7 loss season.

I hope our coach expects a bowl game every year.

Or at least to say so in public even if he doesn't believe it.

I would love a Music City rematch with UNC, but will certainly not complain if we could somehow get a better bowl.

I'm not sure how serious writers can look at Mizzou and see a good football team. Seven gone on O and D. Least number of returning lettermen in the SEC. Top 3 WR's gone. Top RB gone. Best two OL's gone. Best two DL's gone. Two of 3 starting LB's gone. Three of 4 starting DB's gone.

Starting QB gone... and yes I see the love Mauk is getting. But to me how he performed last year as "the guy" is a little more important than mop up and such. As the "guy", he had 4 starts. He was under 50% completions in 3 of them including the UT game.... and that was WITH DGB, Lucas, and Washington who were FAR better WR's than anyone who returns.

Maybe they pull off another miracle season but I think it is more likely they lose to Toledo than beat UT.

I actually think this means something.

Butch is quick to temper expectations after practices and such. He sticks to catch phrases and repeats the important things. This time he was pretty matter of fact. He knows we are better. I don't believe if he honestly thought we were still a year away, or that our youth will be too tough to overcome, that he would state we will go to a bowl.

He would normally say, 'Going to a bowl is not only expected at the university of tennessee but it is critical in the development of our program.'

Butch sees enough to make a black and white statement. He honestly believes we will win 7 or 8. I know that. He wouldn't say this he thought we were a 6 win team. He knows too much can happen. This year may just be the start of something fun.

Ole Miss, Mizzou, UF and Vandy-- we need 2 of these to get to a bowl. IMO, 6 wins is the floor and 7 is reaching for the goal.

Everyone predicting a 4-8 season must think we're going to completely tank at QB, with no freshmen stepping up. If Worley is serviceable, I think we get to 6 without too much drama.
