Jordan Gainey commits to Tennessee

I have a very stoned thought.

Let’s put it this way, would you take Gainey if it meant keeping Aidoo?

Coach Gainey was wanting the HC job, then we heard Aidoo potentially leaving, he didn’t get the job, and now Aidoo is fine. (I’m sure it was mostly NIL driven, but don’t ruin my stonedness)

I’m down for any argument we need to make to feel like things are rosy for us

If you got a stack to spare, they are called “Reverse Shattered Backboard”

I think we’ve discussed this before, but there are different variations of these. I have some that are very similar with white at the top of the high top where the black is on these. Just a few subtle differences, and the price wasn’t even close to what you see for the RSB.

I like Gainey.. But to be fair Key looked like an All-American in the game against Gonzaga last year and this was a disappointment.
Yeah I realize there is an area for concern after the underwhelming hit-rate we've had with transfers, but there were people that thought Gainey wasn't worth a scholarship and some even claimed nepotism because his dad's a coach here.

With Santi and ZZ playing we obviously shouldn't expect 20 point games like he just had, but the fact that he came in here his first game (I realize it didn't count) but actually look like he belonged vs a top 5 team on the road is amazing! Lights out shooter and I was surprised at how well he played defensively.

My first reaction to him joining the team was not a positive one. He certainly looked like he belonged on the court yesterday, however. The jury is still out for this whole team imo, and I'm not willing to declare that anyone in particular is going to be banger or buster just yet aside from Vescovi and Zeigler. But I will say that both Gainey and Knecht took a step in the right direction to sway me. I definitely want them to excel; I'm just not one to immediately give the benefit of the doubt on the topic of incoming transfers. I don't blame anyone for not throwing all their chips in on these new guys, even after the good performances yesterday.

I’m very critical of players and every game I expect it to be a flawless performance and us to go undefeated and win the Natty. Now I know that’s not even realistic (that’s just how bad I want UT to be successful) but regarding being critical of players, I really liked what I saw from Gainey. His first real game situation at UT without our two best backcourt players logging a single minute and he produced and didn’t play scared a single second of the game. He’ll be an asset.

I will admit that yesterday Gainey looked incredibly impressive. Chances are when Vescovi and ZZ return you won’t see a performance like that from him the rest of the year, but if he can just hit those 3’s at the percentage he did yesterday and play solid defense that might be all we need for him to be effective.

Cautiously optimistic about Gainey and the role he will play, but I will reserve final judgement after the season gets started and we see how he performs in the games that matter. Certainly looked the part yesterday.

The best place Gainey can get some minutes might be at PG, even when ZZ gets back....Wasn't sure watching him if he has PG skills but the kid can shoot....We are stacked on the wing so the minutes are going to be hard to come by there......All that said, I thought Gainey looked outstanding, though we all remember Key from the Gonzaga game....

At the absolute worst, this team has more than one legitimate shooter, which was often the issue last year. Rare will be the night when Santi, Knecht, Gainey, ZZZ, Dilione, and JJJ are all just off. Options on options on options.

Gainey is going to have a role. Hit open shots. If he does that, he's earned his scholarship. If he does more than that, it's all gravy.

We are much more athletic than last year. Several players can drive to the basket and create their own shot or pass out for an open 3 Pointer. That was a huge issue last year.

The comparison to Gainey & Key isn’t a good argument.

Key wasn’t very athletic nor a physical guard. Mostly just a spot up shooter who wasn’t cut out for SEC play.

Gainey is long, athletic and can get to the rim while hitting open jump shots.

Yes, it was an exhibition where both teams treated it like an NCAA Tournament game.

I’m excited to see how he progresses over the season.

Gainey looked like a coach’s son that paid attention to his dad. He was very competent as the PG. I really liked how on the early breakaway basket he took the very high percentage approach of making a simple layup instead of drawing attention to himself attempting something spectacular. He understood the situation and knew that the easy 2-points was the way to go with that play.

I don't think anyone is comparing Key and Gainey in terms of play style or physical attributes. It's the fact that they're transfers from mid-majors combined with our poor track record in that department. The questions/concerns that arise in that comparison are valid. Hopefully Gainey will put those to rest.

If it was just 1 game I would be more hesitant, but between the 3 games in Europe and now the exhibition game, we’ve seen very similar play from both Gainey & Knecht each game. With Zeigler & Santi both back the offensive options this team will have should be at a level Barnes probably hasn’t ever had at Tennessee, especially on the perimeter. Dilione appears to be behind some guys at PG which is a little surprising to me, will be interested to watch his role when those guys return, didn’t expect it but he may end up struggling to find big minutes.

One thing to consider is that there’s not been pressure on Gainey to avoid a mistake and be pulled out of these games. He’s getting minutes as long as ZZ is still out. Once there are fewer minutes he could play tighter and not be as impressive. But again, he’s a coach’s son and his game is fundamentally sound.

I think Gainey showed a lot of composure yesterday. I'm actually not nervous about him playing tight to try and "win" minutes. Just as an example, I know this shouldn't be that impressive, but hitting 1 of those 2 free throws to seal the game in that environment was comforting. I guarantee that there are a handful of players on our roster that probably miss both. He was able to dial-in and make one with the crowd noise and pressure. I liked seeing that.

Yep, and also the wherewithall to streak down the sidelines after the turnover and made three to get us those free throws

Gainey ended up with an efficiency rating of 22 which is well above the 15 for an average player. He made six turnovers, but he also had six assists and two steals and a block. His 4 of 7 from the three was awesome. Going to be interesting how Barnes plays everybody at guard when he Vescovi and ZZ get back. You have a lot of players for those two positions.

Very impressive playing a top 5 on the road with the crowd that was like mid-season for MSU. Then I thought back to when our Football was way down and losing to Vandy. All we could think about was Basketball season kicking off. That's where MSU is with the football scandal and football team 2 Ws & 6Ls, the only Ws vs OOC cupcakes.
