Jordan McRae has stepped up...

I'm no Pearl fan, but bringing him into your discussion pretty much negates your point.
No one knows what Pearl could have done with this group. Point of fact, he was a master at finding juco talent in the off season.
He could very well have bolstered the defense until the core of the team caught up on experience and not had the early losses to bad teams.
You don't know and neither do I, so why even mention him.
I do however like what Martin has done.

Pearl was here long enough for us to see that rarely got the most out of his players (minus the first couple of years). Think about how much talent we had from 2008-2011, and then think about how little we did with it.

You're definitely right about the JUCO stuff though. IMO, a lot of Pearl's success can be attributed to the shear level of talent of his teams. He was winning mostly because we had T. Smith, Chism, Hopson, Harris, etc. Do you really think that Martin wouldn't get more from those kinds of players if he coached them?

Actually yeah, but bad blood to bring it up.
I've enjoyed the board more since we got off the Pearl-Martin dog fights.

Saying Pearl could have well bolstered the defense pretty much negates your point. His teams hardy ever played D.

Brain fart I guess. those first couple of seasons always stick in my mind, but you're right.

so who can explain why McBee started over him last night...

Because its been that way the last month. McRae has played so much better coming off the bench. It really doesn't have a lot to do with starting, look at who gets the most minutes. It's much more telling than who starts.

Got ya. Just saw your post in another thread. I'm disappointed.

Don't be. We lose only Woolridge and Cameron tatum. Derek Reese who is the 2* should be much better than Woolridge at a minimum. Dmontre Edwards, who is the juco, is very similar to a Cameron tatum except a little better shooter, and his knees are existent, unlike tatums.

One other thing to keep an eye on is Charles Mitchell. He is a good post recruit that we are going after hard, and is a good friend Of janell stokes. We would have to free up a scholarship for him, but many think washpun, chievous or miller will transfer(maybe 1 or maybe all 3) do if Mitchell wants to come here well make room for him.

The 2013 class will be the big time class for CCM. We will have 4-6 scholarships, and are currently in on some VERY good talent. That will be a class to get excited about, the 2012 class is more of a role player class IMO(although Edwards could turn out to be solid).

I love coach Martin but people way under value what pearl did here at Tenn.......he wasn't loaded with talent.....one NBA player and one that worked his way into being an NBA player.....he was the only coach in the sec to make it to the tourney every single yr he coached here....people claim he can't coach offense, defense or recruit......the man did something right.

I am/was one of the biggest Pearl fans around. I think he is a very good on the floor coach as well as a great recruiter. I do think he recruited too many players with questionable character though. With that said, I really like CCM and feel if he can recruit SEC caliber players on a consistent basis, he will be extremely successful at Tenn.

i thought his x and o coaching was absolutely horrible

Hate to sound pompous, but Martin has been able to get more from his players than Pearl. To be fair, it's still too early to make certain judgements. However, IMO, it seems that this staff has brought sense of discipline, structure, organization that Pearl came nowhere close to. I'm starting to think that Martin is the only person that can hold himself back from being a great coach. He does everything right and has a very structured and effective basketball strategy. So, I would say that as long as he doesn't underachieve, he will be a great basketball coach (hopefully for us), and has a shot at being a figure like Roy Williams, Bill Self, Billy Donovan (<-- lol), etc.

All I know is that I really like coach Martin right now. However, if he cannot succeed in the areas that he should be succeeding in, I would argue against him. Point is that I want to declare that I'm a reasonable person, and not a huge biased Martin-homer.

All the signs of a pure bromance IMO, JMO, JMHO... :)
