Hopson did have a nasty first step for a 6'6-6'7 guy. McRae tends to have a better handle than Hopson. I know Hop got stripped a lot when he forced things, but he could get to the rack WHENEVER he wanted to which was mind boggling why he didn't do it more often. He just wasn't able to finish on a consistent basis...hence the "soft" comparison because he tried to avoid contact. Jordy has a chance to be everything we all wanted Hopson to be and possibly more. One thing I'd like to see from Jordy is Hopson's ability to take a man off the dribble and knock down a 15-footer. McRae is either settling for 3's or he's intent on getting to the rim (mostly out of control).

Hopson had the most explosive first step for someone of his stature that I have ever seen. Few may have been equal, but I've never seen better. McRae is already a better ball handler than Hopson ever was, he just gets out of control more. I've never seen a guard get the ball raked more than Hopson on a per touch basis. Hopson was an athletic savant. Reminds me of the book Of Mice and Men with the ball being Hopson's rabbits

That all comes with experience. A good mid range jumper, much less the desire to shoot it, is typically the last part of a player's game that develops. Kids either want to dunk it or shoot the 3.

After watching the Memphis game, I have to disagree.
I think McRae will be riding the pine by February and we'll lose him to attrition after this season.
He doesn't fit.

IMO it all depends on his maturity. McRae has shown us flashes of what he can do but has the potential to be a really solid player for us. When he gets his emotions in check, he'll be special. He has a natural ability to create his own shot, has a strong work ethic, and seems to be a really good team player (encouragement etc) but still plays young. I really hope this kid adds about 20 more lbs in the offseason.

I dont see that at all. I think this is one of the weaknesses that is slowing his progress right now. He is such a poor ballhandler (same problem as Tatum) that he is not able to create his own shot. He is a catch-and-shoot player right now. You want one of the reasons why are offense is so stagnant in the half court? Tatum, McRae, Skyler all have no ability to break down the defense off the dribble.

You see it too.
It's just my opinion, but I think McRae's 4* ranking was based on his AAU success.
If he was going to be a stand out in Major D1, he'd have been playing for Bruce.
He has become a static catch and shoot guy who never attacks the rim and rarely shows up on defense or in rebounding stats.
At this point he's taking up space on a stagnant roster.
Hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt it.

Correct. It blows my mind that both Tatum and McRae are starters, but if the only other option is McBee, then it leaves you nowhere to go. I think McRae has zero confidence in his ability to drive right now, which has rendered him useless inside 20 feet.

Some people are frustrated with him right now. And I get that.

But McRae is going to be a big time player for us in the future.

He's young. He's immature in terms of basketball and last year was immature off the court. He's improved the latter. He's getting there with the former.

Jordan has a good, positive attitude. He's always one of the first off the bench to jump and down, encouraging the guys. Even when he is struggling, he still is right there with the guys, not sulking on the bench. For a young kid struggling, that's a really good sign.

He has a natural ability to score, just needs more experience. You can't teach his ability to score, his length, his athleticism or his ability to get to the hole. He needs to improve his handle. Despite his struggles, he's shooting 40% from 3, and 86% from the line. He has shown his ability to defend, but needs to understand that needs to be shown 100% of the time.

He needs to get stronger and he will. McRae is going to be a star in 2012 and one of the best scorers in the South. I'm really excited about his future.
I agree with everything you said except that Last Paragraph.

Appropriate for McRae's breakout year.

Nicodemus Christopher (the new S&C coach) has been receiving high praise. Apparently McRae just cracked 200lbs...quite an accomplishment for Nic.

J. Cole was right.

I've been wrong about many things this year, but I at least got this one. :)

Never been so happy for you to be wrong, imagine where we'd be without McRae.

His willingness to attack the rim has really made the difference in his game. CCM said he's shooting 60+% from 2, and he's also getting to the line where he's very good. I'm so happy he has turned the corner, what a player he has turned into.

Kudos to him for buying in and putting in the work. He's willing to play D for 40 minutes now and that's why he is getting 30+ minutes a game now.

Way to call McRae's sudden explosion in productivity this year! His decision to start attacking the rim has made a world of difference.
