In German, the word for bridge is in the masculine gender. In Spanish, it is in the feminine gender. Some languages have neutral genders, others have multiple genders.

Think about how the evolution of language has affected our very binary and limited discussion of the topic. There is a very direct correlation.

I know. So stop pretending you have a full grasp on all of human history in regards to differences between gender and sex. Even the Hebrews had a third sex.
No they didn’t. You are just pulling up obscure/ false things to try to sustain your point

It may seem that way based on your self-limited knowledge. Do you want to know more, or are you content basing further understanding on the limited information you have now?

But someone decided that though. The point I'm making is that definitions are not objective--they're created by people, i.e., subjective.
I suppose you could argue the language is subjective. But that’s not got any bearing on the two physical outcomes. No amount of language or invention of terms is going to alter the physical reality

You can type whatever you like. I enjoy reading different views.

"It was all based on the dangly bits up until a few years ago."

Hrm. Things changed when we started to understand chromosomes, chromosomal formation, pituitary response... Holy ****, knowledge made us change the way we view the universe. Knowledge bad! Kill knowledge!

Pick your distinguishing factor, that’s fine. The problem is when you have someone that meets every acknowledged biological characteristic of a male, but somehow still fancies himself a woman. It’s mental illness

What tests are you including to determine biological characteristic?

Is it not almost universally acknowledged that a humans gender is determined by the presence of X Y chromosomes

Yes. And using just those two different chromosomes, we have countless combinations. Single X. Fragile X. False XY. XYY. XXY. I could go on, if you'd like.

I know some of that, obviously not as much as you. Though that doesn’t make gender mutable, which is more or less my main position in our dispute

But the point is that if gender isn't the same as sex then it doesn't matter. Trans people aren't arguing that they don't have the genitals they actually do have. They're arguing that gender is not the same as sex.

I guess I’m among the crowd that doesn’t see a distinction between those two things. In my view it’s mental illness, and that was the prevailing view until 5 years ago. I don’t see any legitimate basis for the collective shift in understanding

I used to be very much in your camp; I understand exactly where you're coming from. It was hard for me to deal with friends who were genderqueer or gender fluid and I wished they could just pick one. You know what? Many of them want the same thing.

The part of it all that is the most difficult to address is the neurochemical portion of the equation. The parts of the brain that determine biological and psychological expressions are not always linked properly and may push out conflicting information to the body. The chromosomal blueprint led the body to work this way and nothing short of gene therapy is going to make a dent in changing it.

Lacking the technology to address the situation, the best thing for many people is to accept their blueprint results and live a life surrounded by people who give them leeway to be who they are. The rest of us can treat them with dignity while we to to understand.
