Josh Heupel appreciation post

Josh has been consistent to this point. Pay the players what they are worth and don’t over pay just to keep someone.

Josh knows that to overpay will cause problems with those who don’t get overpaid. He has let several players walk recently.

Unless you have unlimited pockets and NO business sense you can’t overpay everyone just because they are threatening to walk. Even Ugly didn’t overpay Beck and let him walk.

He saw what we saw last year. Nico is good, like $2 mil good, but not elite like the $4 mil variety.
Don't include the vast majority of us as WE! I bet CJH didn't see the 2.4 million worth! That was Spyre! Nico wasn't worth 2.4 based on 2 TDs thrown total vs Ark, Bama, UF, UGA, and OU! UT goes 10-3 with any serviceable avg QB with the OL, Sampson, and lights out D for those 10 games!

CJH has common sense and knew there were some lines Nico couldn’t cross.
NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE FOOTBALL PROGRAM, period.
Nico, while having a lot of the physical measurables doesn’t seem to have the mental fortitude or leadership qualities to be worth what he and his family were hoping for.
It could be argued that 2 million was too much as well.
This was not a wise choice by Nico and it quite possibly could be a decision he may regret for the rest of his life.

Thank you CJH for moving on forward…..

Maybe I’m crazy but Heupel almost seemed relieved at the press conference. Some of the language makes me think the people around Nico had been more an issue than anyone knew.

Honestly feel like Heupel was holding his offense back for Nico.

That and I think he was sick of constantly dealing with Nico’s father. He definitely didn’t seem too upset, and the players didn’t either (other than being angry at Nico). Makes me think there was more drama than we knew about in the locker room.

It's a pretty big stretch to think Spyre could overrule Coach Heupel and say "Whether you like it or not, we're going to pay this guy $2.4M" especially if you give Coach Heupel the credit for not giving him $4M.

Maybe Heupel WANTED to give him $4M and Spyre wouldn't since you think they called the $2.4M and not Heupel.

I like coach Heupel. But I hope the fans never go all out on a player again until they finish what they started. Coaches, admin, heck the whole state of Tennessee, treated Nico like royalty and him and his family spit in our faces. Hope we never forget that Vol nation
Here's my thing: (clearly I will be in the minority) It is becoming increasingly clear that Heupel put up with this family's junk for a long time. I think that's a problem. Saying nobody is bigger than the team and UT trying to act like they cut Nico loose plays well with the fans, but it's clear that isn't what's happened here. This kid and his people have called the shots here, and when stuff went public, UT made the right call to start leaking and look like they had enough. I'm concerned that they were sticking with him in spite of his people continuing to try to leverage him it to more money at the expense of the good of the team.

So why did he put up with it for so long?

Because I think he saw promise in Nico and knew that he could develop him. Also, I don’t think that Josh was gonna be the guy to boot Nico off of the team and lose the locker room or fanbase. However, I think once Nico’s camp played their games, Josh and Danny were fine telling his father and him to get lost.

I understand all that, but if he really threatened to hold out, you end it after that game. You can leak the details like they're doing now and you come off looking good. You get a very good QB in the portal after Christmas and you're in good shape.

I appreciate he got backed into a corner without knowing that this Noco thing was going to happen BUT there is much evidence that CJH was intimately involve in Affairs Nico for quite a while.
