GTFO! Heupel owned Kelly's azz last year and BK has not done one damn thing since then to convince me differently. LSU is so overhyped right now, and they are gonna get shredded, starting with FSU game. LSU's current OL, RBs, CBs? Gimme a break.
I think so too. They are way overrated and Kelly is a terrible coach. Truthfully he’s probably the third or fourth best coach in the west. I would take Saban, Lane and Freeze all over Kelly

Would the teams coached by the 3 ahead of CJH perform better, worse, or the same if CJH was their head coach?

Would our team last year performed better, worse, or same if any of the other 3 coached the '22 Vols?

I think Saban and Smart out talent. Not sure they are better as game day scheme guys. Talent and recruiting are part of the head coach gig, so I understand we cannot remove that factor from discussion.

I think Kelly maybe had a more impressive season when looking at where LsU started compared to how they ended.
Smart and Saban have pretty much equally talented rosters, and Smart has deployed his talent far better against us the last 2 years than Saban has, so I've got to give Smart scheme credit too, at least as to defense. Agree about Kelly, anybody who thinks he isn't a good coach has blinders on. It's a real credit to Heupel that he went 2-1 against those three guys last year.

Kirby's plan is elite talent. I don't see anything revolutionary in his defensive schemes...except for the pre snap shift his DL will do.

Saban has the same plan — equally talented players.

We hung 52 on him, and couldn’t move the ball against Kirby.

Something was different, and it wasn’t talent.

I agree there were differences. But those differences extend far beyond talent and scheme. Although, I believe UGA defense was more talented than Bama. Differences:
Location
Weather
Crowd noise

I think UGA DBs and DL were better than Bama.

Also keep in mind Bama replaced their D coordinator for 2023.

I can understand your opinion as Kirby has had a ridiculous amount of talent to work with on Defense. Absolutely this has allowed for success. But as @Titans4Vols eluded to, Kirby has done something special with this mint defensive front.

It’s all about confusing the O-line and the QB presnap. Some call it simulated pressure, but it just disguises where pressure might come from. It’s not a new concept, but honestly GA has just done it very well lately. Confusion causes chaos, and that’s what a defense wants. It has worked well.

In the truest meaning of the word the best coach is the one who gets the most from the player talent with which he has to work.

Considering that, Heupel is number one.

In 2 or 3 years, Saban will retire and Alabama will pursue only the best coach out there. Heupel will be one of the best , if not the best, out there.

Saban should be #1 til he retires. Smart is on a roll but he is not better than Saban right now.
I agree, I’ve no love for Bama or Saban, but the man has earned it. He is the GOAT in my opinion, and will continue to be until someone surpasses him. It will take some time for that to happen if it ever does. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t trade Kirby Smart for anyone, but Saban has absolutely earned the title of the GOAT.

UGA's DB's and DL's were better coached than Bama's. Bama was stacked with 4 and 5 stars too they just weren't as disciplined/assignment sound or deployed as well.

It'd be hard to convince me that Saban came into a great (or even a good) situation.

Rumors are that boosters/power brokers rushed Stallings out the door after having the unacceptable back to back 3 loss seasons

Enter Franchione.....
one middling 7-5 season
followed by a 10-3 season in which they were not eligible for post season play
Fran bolts for another job

Enter Mike Price in 2003.....never coaches a game

enter Mike Shula in 2003----
3-8 in season 1
6-6 year 2
10-2 has one really good season
6-7 and is shown the door in 2007

my memory is fuzzy but along the way it seems like there were multiple NCAA investigations, Fulmer telling recruits Bama was getting the death penalty, post season bans and a bunch of vacated wins.

Feels kind of eerily similar to me

The "Better situation" is simply the fact that the Gumps will do WHATEVER is takes to win! Rules be damned. It has always been that way. Money will flow and boosters will boost. That and the fact that Saban was/is a relentless recruiter and .... POOF!... Monster program in short order. UT has NEVER been one to spend the big bucks on anything. Maybe those times are changing.
