Josh Heupel Performance Review

If Heupel goes 8-4 or 9-3 with Nico do we say 2022 was a “fluke” year like mizzou had this year and back to 4-4 conference play?

If Heupel goes 10-2 or makes the playoffs even if it’s an away game and get throttled by “Oregon” or whomever do we haul him as the next Fulmer and give him a 10 year extension and pay him 8 million a year??
Good question. New SEC slate will make it tougher on all to go 8-4/9-3. But with two probable losses to UGA and Bama, 9-3 means we handled either handled one of UF/OK or beat the both and slipped up somewhere else. Top 12 definitely the goal…whatever that looks like.

A

Context is key.

If Heupel had inherited a roster of filet mignon like Fulmer did in 1992 then 27-12 over 3 years would deserve a D, if a passing grade at all.

Heupel inherited a roster of breakfast steak. He beat Brian Kelly, Nick Saban and Dabo in year 2 and finished with an Orange Bowl win a top 10 ranking. That was wildly unthinkable when we let Pruitt go and had all the roster turnover.

Was the Florida game this year a blemish? Yes. But other than that and a few nits he’s been outstanding and we are lucky to have him.

We are relevant and in the conversation again. Expecting more after year 3, considering where this program was, is unrealistic.

I expect great things in 2024.

Just look at who our coaches were from 2010 till he got to UT.
The guys he was/is recruiting grew up watching UT suck with some of the worst coaches in football. Certainly the worst trio of coaches.

Defense has improved every year in every category. Seems his DB coach is doing well
Yeah, that’s why 3rd and whatever is almost a given if the opposing team passes. That 10 yard cushion the corners give the wide recievers……yeah, I’m sure it’s just confidence. 🙄🙄

You bring up a good point. He has, IMO, had a bit of free pass starting with nothing. Is year 4 the year the pass starts to expire? He now has his guys in place. Players he has developed. Again, I am very happy with how he has done and adjusted on the fly to deficiencies but it is starting to become his program now.
My opinion is that if year after next is like this past year or worse, last year was just an anomaly and he is really what we thought after last year with Hooker.

All NCAA problems will be vanished therefore, no reason not to be competitive. My voice when he was hired was that he was a placeholder for the next coach. I truly hope I’m incorrect!

Remember the Heupel curve?

Introduced it a month or two ago.

Here it is again, with notes added:

Personally, considering the absolute mess he came in to I still consider this an A+ performance. That Florida record is my only needs improvement comment. As a fan I am still feel very fortunate he is our coach.
He’s beat Nick,Dabo , Kelly, Jimbo, Ferentz,Stoops in his first three years. After the dumpster fire and sanctions he inherited. Some people are just plain Stupid

Or just being realistic. Noticed we are not having to worry about anyone stealing him away right now? Huge sign that we have an average coach who needs to do better next season, so he doesn't become a D- coach.
😂 😂

Well for starters, there should be a vacancy to fill after Bama makes their choice. Let’s see if they try and steal Heupel away from us. Honestly, if he would try an improve there would probably be an opening for him in the NFL as an OC or head coach.

Username fits. To show up at our program as is in 2021 and be instantly competitive is an impressive accomplishment. Also, nicely done leaving Jimbo, Dabo, Ferentz off the list to push your narrative.

Why do some supposed fans so eagerly push false narratives that put our coaches/players/program down? It’s just weird.

He’s 14-10 in the SEC so there’s obviously some “SEC competition” you’re missing to make your point.

Lulz.

overall I don't think we could be in much better shape than we are after 3 years. I'm concerned with some of his personnel decisions and distinct lack of depth among certain position groups, but the talent level of the team as a whole is much improved. I think Heupel has problems recruiting olinemen because of our hurry up system though.

I always heard you are what your record says you are. Heupel's record says he is avearage, so the grade of C stands.

Winning Percentage:58.33%
Winning Percentage = (Wins / Total Games Played) × 100
= (14 / 24) × 100
= 0.58 × 100
= 58.33%

(Keep in mind that 3 of the 14 wins are against Vandy)

What is your point, Loser?

I genuinely believe a lot of the "loservols" forgot where we were before Heupel took over. It's kind of sad in my opinion that they need to be reminded.

Reminding where we've been the last decade plus, isn't an excuse and doesn't give him a free pass forever.

I'm not going to list all the things he had to overcome because you all know them. He's made some mistakes and he has disappointed. But that's life.

I remember him ending a long drought against Nick Saban and his bunch. I remember how I felt when that football went through the uprights.

I give him a solid B for the last 3 years and can't wait for August.

The quick response to that this year was it was caused by Joe’s limitations. I’m sure that played a role, but I screamed at the TV a lot this year when we ran off tackle on 2nd and 9.
Joe was as good as throwing the short pass as HH plus, he had plenty of receivers that could catch and run but, CJH did not utilize those throws nearly as often as we should have, IMO. These would have been good plays on 2nd and 9 vs off tackle. Just sayin'...

There are only a handful of teams in the country that would have a better record against Saban and smart than we do. And that’s with heupel coming into an absolute mess.
