Baltimore products Will Barton, Josh Selby and Roscoe Smith represented their region well at the King City Classic - ESPN

Josh Selby is a versatile player at the point. Staying on point
Tennessee commit Josh Selby (Baltimore/Lake Clifton) is one of the most aggressive scoring point guards in the country. On Wednesday, he finished above the rim with authority in transition, got in the lane to score on acrobatic layups and handed off assists to wide-open post players. He competes and plays with toughness and never allows his defender to relax. He can knock down the deep 3s. When he gets into a flow, he can rip off four or five baskets in a row, all in different ways. He tends to overpenetrate at times, which can lead to turnovers. Still, this young guard has the talent and potential to be a major factor for the Vols right away.

Ok? What in that article makes him wrong? Don't think he questioned his ability.
The fact it now says Lake Clifton instead of DeMatha indicates the coach of the preeminent program in high school basketball history thinks I'm right.

A bad attitude can more than offset a great skill set. Let's hope thats not the case with Selby, but I'm not entirely sure.

Thus, he is a liability...
Actually, if you notice, I said POTENTIAL attitude problem. Doesn't mean things can't change.

Besides, attitudes haven't completely wrecked physical contributions to ball clubs in a lot of cases.

His attitude will be fine just as soon as he performs at the elite level he is capable of in college! He will discover he is on his way to becoming a multi millionare and chill until his junior year and we will miss him and his attitude cutting down nets.

Why did we have to give Pearl that raise/extension?My gawd... I can realistically see this getting ugly in 2010/2011 and we are back to the Fulmer situation. When is he gonna get some recruits in here that can play?

ESPN is smoking crack. All the guys from both Scout and Rivals raved about Selby and thought he might have been the best player there, along with Teague. He should have easily made first team. He was much more consistent than Phil Pressey.

Were you there?

Were you there?

Lol, I thought someone might say that. No, I wasn't there. However, we got regular updates from guys like Eric Bossi and Evan Daniels over at the Tennessee Scout forums. We also got updates from Rob Lewis and Jerry Meyer on Rivals. Just being honest, I value their opinions far more than I do anyone from ESPN.

I also feel the need to post this over here. I posted this in response to hatvol in the Jordan McRae thread, but it's more appropriate in this thread:

DeMata runs the possibly the best and classiest program in all of high school basketball. No one player is allowed to think or act as if they are more important than the team. They threw Selby out on his ass. Connect the dots.

FYI, Selby was not "thrown out on his ass". He transferred for academic reasons. One, Dematha is an extremely tough school academically. Two, I'll just show a quote from a Scout article on June 3rd:

“I switched from DeMatha because of the traveling issue,” said Selby of his junior year transfer. “What I learned there was to be mentally tough. Catching a train at six o’clock in the morning, not getting home until one sometimes and then being back up at five taught me to be tough.”

THIS was the reason Selby was supsended from the team for a while. It wasn't his "attitude", but because he missed the 6 o'clock train and had no way to get to school. The train was his only way to school because he lived far away from Dematha and had no one to take him. He was supsended for "skipping" school.

Imagine what a pain it would be to have to get up at 5 in the morning, go to school, go to bball practice, and then not get home until after midnight, only to have to get up at 5 o'clock and do it all over again. How many of us would over-sleep ocassionally and miss the train?

Selby also had this to say about the perception people have about him:

“A lot of people don’t know, their opinions don’t really matter to me,” finishes Selby. “As long as the people that really know me know who I am, that’s all that matters. I know that people label me as a problem child but that’s not who I am. So the people who say that’s who I am need to get to know me. They don’t understand me at all.”

I personally think that Selby has a swagger that we need. His fearlessness translates well to his game. He admits that sometimes his emotions get him in trouble, but I see that as something that, as he matures, can be harnassed to make him an emotional leader for us.

For the mods: Even though the quotes are from a competing site, please leave them, because I think some people really need to see them.

And like it Hatvol. You think you are the know-all basketball guru for some reason. And you are not. Sorry that guys burst your bubble.

Of course Selby is going to say that. I don't know what happened, but I know that he's not gonna say "Hell yeah man, I told the coach that I wasn't going to do the **** he told me to do, and they wouldn't take it. I got kicked off then and there"

He's gonna try to justify it anyway possible.

Well, the part about him having to hop on a train to get to school and missing a few days of school because of it is fact. It would stand to reason that that would lead to disciplinary action, even if he has a good excuse.

There are only assumptions and speculation for his "baditude" causing his suspension, and he certainly wasn't kicked off the team.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm giving the kid the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise.

I am not a basketball recruiting guru, but....

Have we addressed our needs for the post-Chism/T. Smith era?

Other than bringing in Hall this year, we haven't. But, the '10 Class is far from finished. If we avoid another APR hit and have all 13 scholarships, then there are 6 spots coming open. There are two committed players for '10. That leaves 4 spots.

This is a very important year on the recruiting trail.
