I didn't really have access to much info on this player regarding high school stats and competition. I've heard a few say he was underrated coming out as a 3*. And apparently he's been standing out in practice. Does anyone have any info on his high school performance and maybe some clarity as to why he may have been overlooked?

I'm sure size and poor competition were a big part of it. I seem to remember him picking up an OSU offer near the end. Also seem to remember an outrageous SPARQ score. Kid is a good athlete.

Not sure about his stats but I know he was injured for a lot of his senior year, so I'm not sure how many yards he had this past season.

I thought CAK played some of the better competition in the state? Like Alcoa.

I am sure that I could google his actual stats but what I can tell you is - caucasian -- small Christian school in Knoxville - I believe they are AA which is a very low classification in the state. Now offset that with

Prolific - prolific passing offense - I believe they won the state for the past two years and when they did beat Alcoa it was always a shootout - 55 to 48 62 to 55 or something like that. I believe that even injured some - he set a record for most receptions ever in the state of Tennessee or something to that effect. I don't care who you are - you are doing something right - running crisp patterns, getting separation and hanging onto the football. Someone else mentioned his athleticism.

I don't think anyone would describe his as a beast -- probably only 6'1 or 6'2 so I can see how he could have been overlooked.

Why do people act like 6'1" or 6'2" is small? That's pretty good height for a WR (especially since most DBs are a few inches shorter). Not all receivers are calvin johnson sized. Doesnt make them small though

They may but that is still East Tennessee football. I hate to say it but every year there are ten+ schools in Georgia, or Florida that would dominate the best team in TN. Easy for talent to get overlooked.

This. You're LUCKY if you get a guy like Megatron with that height and ability, there are still great recievers at 6'1 or 6'2. Guys like Jerry Rice and Hines Ward come to mind.

He had a good qb and another WR that was really good too (Howell)

CAK played Alcoa twice last year losing by 3 in one and winning by 4 or 5 in the playoffs I believe. Anyways, no, OSU didn't offer. UT, Arky, and ironically Cincy were his only offers. But the kid caught 22 TDs for 2,000 yards. That's nothing to to complain about. Plain and simple, it appears the kid only knows one thing, winning.

I don't think lucky is even the word for that.

That was Davis Howell, the weather mans son. And it was the national record for most reception/and or yards in a high school career. Not sure which record it was but I know it was a national record.

@wesrucker247: Don't sleep on Vols true freshman receiver Josh Smith. Knoxville boy might have the best ball skills on the team. Will help this year.

You might think this kid is good once you eliminate the high school star rating system. It is what you do on the field that counts and that is BuTch's philosophy. Afterall, the NFL has more 3 stars from high school than 4 or 5 stars combined.

this kid was usually the best athlete or top 3 on the field, no matter who they were playing. He came up to catch at camps prior to breaking his collarbone and made good athletes look silly. He also grabbed a football during a break when all the qb's were trying to see how far they could throw the ball and had the longest throw of any of them. He's also gained a ton of muscle in a short time. If you look at his jr pic then look at a recent one, it won't look like the same kid.

Why did Dooley offer this kid a scholarship again? I thought everything Dools touched turned to garbage, including his talent evaluations.
