Joyner Holmes article

There aren't many bargains in sports, but one of them is NCAA Division I Women's College Basketball – and that's a problem.
It doesn't take a committee on economic oversight to see a glaring imbalance between what schools charge to attend men's versus women's college basketball.

I don't see how this is a problem. Schools charge what the market will bear for men's tickets, and that is important revenue for the school. If schools tried to charge the same for women's games, attendance would fall off dramatically.

No matter if we love or hate Holly, if she is having problems recruiting some of top high school talent for every position, there is an issue that has to be dealt with. Tennessee is a class program but yet we really do not have a legit post to back up Russell. We can't allow ourselves to be happy with win totals and what Pat did in her first few years. I also agree with a prior comment that we cannot continue to use the excuse, "We can't force players to choose Tennessee." We have to stop looking at years 17-18 and 18-19 and look at the here and now, we need a good 16-17 recruiting class.

Wasn't UT packing a big arena for most home games for many years when PS was coach--and yet the program was losing money? That's hard to believe. I thought our women's program made money. Even now we must draw more fans than 95 percent of the women's programs in the country, which would mean that everybody else is losing considerable money. I would hope that the administration would never be happy with Sweet 16s--that would mean accepting a demonstrably lower standard than we have for 30 years.

Yes, lost money. All the women's sports and most of the men's lose money. They only two sports that pay for themselves and everybody else is men's football and basketball.

WE HAVE RUSSELL
Every post in HS KNEW or KNOWS that! She is 6ft6, at least, and since early October last year, all reports were how much better she was already moving. She was number 1 in her class, ahead of Diamond! She is a star, not many top post want to play second fettle to that kind of talent. Baylor sure didn't have a back up star to Griner. People need to remember Texas AM beat Griner with a team who's tallest player was 6ft2. With Russell redshirting, I think we lost out on post last year, I firmly believe 2016 will be a bang up year for our post haul. Tennessee has done really well under Holly recruiting. If some idiot had not beat up on Tucker, we would have Graves, Tucker, Russell, Nared, Diamond, and Cooper, in Holly's recruiting chest. All top 10 recruits! Near misses at Wilson, and a few others. No one gets everyone they want. We are also not empty at the post, we have Nared and Jones, both wonderful rebounders, and who knows what Dubar will become, and Nia has no weight but shows a nice offensive touch and quick hands, she isn't a weak link as a back up, she is a four year senior who has played against some pretty damn good talent in practice for years. Everybody needs to stop drinking the negative koolaid, yes we haven't been to the final 4 but 2 elite 8's where, we really should have won, let's not forget how many times Pat couldn't get over the hump of winning the big ones in the tournament too. Lord knows we have been limping come tournament time, missing two starters and making the elite 8 last year, was a damn good feat in my book!

I really believe women's basketball, when the athletic departments were separated (the good ole days) was in the black, and I would need proof otherwise, and remember books are fudged to show near break even at all government institutions, no matter what any of them say. Even college football!

You do realize that in Pat's first two years she had a total of 32 wins and Holly in her first two (not counting the year with Pat on the side lines with her) she has 59 wins. Pat's move to the final four was in year 3 ... let's wait and see how Holly finishes her 3rd year.

Eveyone has to move passed what Pat did in the 80s and 90s when women's basketball was not even an after thought for 95% of the country. Now women's basketball is relavent due to what Pat did to build the women's basketball brand along with Tennessee's. Choices and selections are totally different so be encouraged by the current direction of the current Lady Vols roster and at least wait until the season starts before jumping off the bridge based on what you think Holly is or isn't doing ...

This is an odd comparison. Pat got those 32 wins in 51 games played. Holly's 59 were accomplished in 71 games played and with a far more generous travel budget...

But I would bet the competition, top to bottom, on the Tennessee schedule in the mid-70s was just a bit easier than Holly's has been the last two years. Even with that in mind, she has a 20% higher winning percentage (83%) which most coaches would kill to have along with SEC titles both years.

I think Holmes will be making her decision next month also. I don't think Texas would take Johnson verbal, if she decides to verbal to Texas, until after Holmes has made her decision. Many believe she is the best player in her class. Her athleticism is similar to Jasmine Jones with a more polish offensive game. She is good and whatever school lands her will be very happy. In the end, I think she chooses Texas. I don't even know if she's visited any other schools unofficially.
Joyner visited USC (L.A.) last September during a football weekend; went the same time some 2015 Cedar Hill football players were making their official visits.

Looking at Texas current roster, they are supporting 16 players right now. That includes Vandy's transfer, who is sitting this season out.
They will loose 4 players to graduation, only one being a post.
So Joyner's freshman year, she will be competing with these post players:
Jordan Hosey (#16 2015) 6'1
Christina Aborowa (#72 2015) 6'4
Khaléann Caron-Goudreau (Vandy Transfer) 6'3 **any idea where her twin sister went?**
Sara Hattis 6'4
Kelsey Lang 6'5 (will be a senior when Joyner is freshman)

Current recruting for 2015 prospects:
6'4 Cierra Johnson (#16 2016 class) - Will make a decision next month.

I agree Joyner will be hard to get. I also think her talent will probably put her in front of some of the players already on the roster. But looking at Tennessee roster vs. Texas roster, her resources would go farther here than Texas. But, that seems to not really be a factor for players today .... connections and how comfortable they feel (which are important). Either way it sounds like she will be wearing some kind of orange. Fingers Crossed!
Sara Hattis is a senior (academically); she was on volleyball scholarship most of her first 3 years at Texas; on hoops scholarship for her 1st ad 3rd Spring semesters. She has since given up volleyball, and is now on hoops' scholarship. There's a chance she moves on after this season if she is graduating in May.

Probably 2 other current Texas players will be part of attrition after the upcoming season.

Audrey-Ann Goudreau is at Gulf Coast Community College in Florida; most expect her to sign with Texas for 2016.

We are in need of a true Center after Imani graduates. Ciera Johnson appears to be the main Center prospect.

Plus the other twin Audrey Ann will transfer to Texas in 2016 after attending Gulf Coast State College in Panama City this year.
