Julian Phillips - any chance he stays?

I have a hard time seeing him being practical and arriving at the decision that leaving early is in his best interest. I've read several articles saying he should return. Those are generally based in some form of reality. There isn't much tape to suggest he's ready to make it, yet.
I agree about his tape. When I look at Miller at Bama, I see a guy who shows up night in and night out and is the player his team looks to when the chips are down. More often that not, he delivers. You need a bucket so you hand him the ball and let him win the game for you. I don't see Phillips being able to do that right now. Phillips is looking more like JJJ or ON in that they're just as likely to vanish as to play a solid game. They've got physical tools but disappear way too much. Not a lot of dawg in either of those 2 players. You simply can't do that at the next level and expect to stay on a roster and get paid. The NBA is a league of freak athletes oozing with dawg in 'em. League would eat Phillips up right now....and don't get me started with JJJ and ON trying to play on a floor with NBA players. Talk about a fish outta water.

No insight. When I’ve asked, no one knows. At a 50 +\- pick, I’d make the case he can make more money by staying. He’s not touching his potential.
That’s my thought as well and I know we both thought preseason that he/his family weren’t dead set on being one and done.

Jmo, unlike our recent one & dones, I think it would be in his best interest to play another year in college. Hopefully I'm completely wrong for having this concern, but if he does decide to stay in school, I could see him possibly transferring. I don't think that would help UT in any way if that hypothetical scenario were to happen. Again, hopefully I'm being dumb for having that concern.

I just don’t see him transferring from Tennessee with how much PT he would have returning for his sophomore year. Especially with how much Barnes likes him. Only way I see him leaving is to go to the NBA, but at this point that’s not very smart JMO

To me if you’re thinking about transferring just enter the draft, how many legitimate draft picks have we seen transfer? It’s a major risk going to a new school/system with a new staff, at that point you’re just better off taking that 2nd round pick and starting your NBA career rather than risking losing stock.

Good point, but I wonder if the idea of transferring is perceived as less risky now that you get a free one...

Yea but that was the case last year as well, and there weren’t really any examples…it’s still a risk, look at BHH with Louisville. I just think you’re better off taking your 2nd round pick rather than transferring and hoping things then work out better at that school than at the school you’re already established at.

I’ve been paranoid on that front too. His body language can be read as disengaged, and he’s not a particularly expressive kid on the court. Everything I’ve heard contradicts that worry though. He supposedly very coachable, stays late, and is close with team and coaches. I don’t read BHH in him. If anything, the length of the season, and injuries discouraged him, but no one reads it as a flight risk. Anything is possible, but I think he’s going to be deciding between a diminished draft spot, or staying and getting NIL money while he gets better.

Phillips is a mid/late-2nd rounder (#47 overall to Boston) in Jonathan Givony's latest mock draft.

Another year here would improve his draft stock tremendously.

Definitely needs to get stronger
My concern is that he simply has bad hands, and that's often times very difficult to fix. Seems like a good kid who wants to work hard and help his team. Of course, I'd love to see him return for his sophomore year and hopefully improve his handles.

Some may not remember but he reminds of Joakim Noah of Florida different games but similar paths Noah freshman year he sucked like no other and after one off season helped lead Florida to back to back National Titles not saying it will happen but sometimes it takes a minute to adjust
