Just an observation.........

Seriously though, I just think he's happy to be here. I think he's grateful for the opportunity. And I think his excitement about the possibilities and potential for this football program is written all over his face. I also think it's extremely contagious.

Totally agree. I can remember comments he made when his Cincy team came to Neyland. He was very impressed with the tradition UT has, the fans, the stadium, just about everything he saw. I truly think this became his dream job once the offer was made. Burch wants to be here, and be here for many years. If that happens, all of us will be very happy campers.

Butch does get it, and the "it" is what place UT has in the history of college football, and will give his total effort to get us back to where we should be.

their similarities center around their zest and zeal to make UT a winner. Butch and staff will not get into NCAA trouble. Our UT VOLS program will be envied by many very soon.

I don't really get why CBJ being grateful to have this job makes him qualified for it. I'm not saying I think he's going to fail like Dooley, I just find it interesting that everyone's biggest reason for optimism with this guy is that he's "happy to be here." If I somehow landed the CFO job at my company, I'd be incredibly grateful for the opportunity. I'd be fired up and ready to give it my all. That doesn't mean I'm going to do a great job.
It's sad that this fan base has been beaten into submission lately, and the inferiority complex is all we seem to know anymore. Having a coach that we're convinced won't leave us is somehow enough for comfort these days.
That's just MY observation.

The conversation wasn't about his qualifications. It was about the excitement he brings.

And you're welcome to paint our optimism any way you want. But it appears you're trying to use a single color, which rarely gives an accurate portrait of anything.

But surely you'll agree that Bruce Pearl's "big positive splash" wasn't just because of the excitement he had for the job. It was because he won games and got us a 2 seed in the tournament his first season.
You can be as optimistic as you like. I just prefer a little more substance when looking for reasons for optimism. Something like his tireless recruiting efforts, or his in-game-coaching history. Falling in love with a guy just because he's happy he got a big time job seems a little silly to me.

I don't know anybody that has done this: Falling in love with a guy just because he's happy he got a big time job seems a little silly to me

If he's like Pearl, does that mean we are going to beat Kentucky and Florida?

Seriously, the comparison is a good one. It is all about the opportunity on the big stage and them being ready to step into the spotlight with excitement--not entitlement.
