No Chaney, No Dooley, No Sunseri! Sick of an offense that will not run the ball, defense has gotten worse and Dooley can't manage a game. Wish no ill will, just want some competent coaching.

Before losing to Missouri, I might have considered looking at a scenario where Dooley stayed (although it would have taken a lot for me to stomach any such discussion). However, with the loss to Mizzou ... especially the way we just fell apart in the 2nd half ... I have concluded that the problem now is that a culture of losing has now taken root in our locker room. The only way to fix that is a change at the top.

It's just like in the Army. When a unit has a toxic atmosphere within the command, you have to remove the guy(s) at the top and start over. I've seen it many times ... a unit gets a new commander and/or sergeant major and the entire mentality and outlook of the unit completely transforms. This can be for better or worse (seen it go both ways).

In our case, there's nowhere to go but up. Again, I've got no malice toward Derek Dooley. I just want this nightmare to end.

We have the 111th ranked defense in the country, and are still almost competitive, having lost 4 games by less than one score. Our offense is averaging 45 points per game this season. I see no problem with that. Maybe we are cutting our nose off to spite our face.

If we can land Gruden or Patterson, I say we do it!

But if not one of those two, keep from having to pay Dooley's buyout, keep Chaney, and go and get a proven defensive coordinator. ie Zook or Stoops.

We wouldn't have to rebuild and Zook is an amazing recruiter.

I'm gonna hang up and listen.
Ok this is the last reminder for you Dooley lovers. He has almost ruined this program. One more year should do it. 0-6 SEC this year 0-6 last year started 0-5 first year. Improve not? 1st loss to ky in over 30 yrs most pts ever given up by a ut team. Worst losing streak in 60 yrs. 12th in SEC recruiting. I could go on and on. But I will hang up now.

I never wanted Dooley in the first place. I never agreed with the hire. I don't understand why a program like Tennessee would ever hire someone who isn't a proven coach. It just never made any sense to me.

We were 1-6 in the SEC last year; we are 0-6 so far this year. Sal is not the common denominator. Dooley is.

Most people on here post or make decisions based only on their emotions and the win/loss record.

There's many factors to be taken into consideration in our current situation but most people on here either totally ignore all those other factors or are too young and don't understand them.

Most think that any coach can come in and do a better job but they bash anyone that even thinks anything good about CDD as settling for being mediocre.

The sad thing is that most on here ARE willing to settle for a middle of the road coach just because of their hate for CDD.

It's sad that their hate of CDD really COULD set our football program BACK for 3 to 5 years or even much longer.

We should NOT settle for any old coach or the 7th person on our coaching prospect list and be a middle of the road team for another 3 to 5 years!!!

If AD Hart fires CDD then we MUST get a true HOMERUN hire of a great coach that's a great recruiter with a big name that top recruits will know and respect.

If we just settle for whatever coach we can get then that's a HUGE mistake and will set us BACK for many years to come.

It actually WOULD be a much smarter decision to keep CDD for 1 more year and next year get the HOMERUN coach to replace him.

I'd much rather be set back only 1 more year than to be set back 3 to 5 years or perhaps much longer with a pathetic hire this year.

Those of you that want any coach we can get just to get rid of CDD simply ARE the people willing to settle for being a middle of the road or a bad team for many years to come.

Dumb decisions by dumb people now have us STUCK with a horrid president for 4 more years.

I certainly hope AD Hart does NOT make a dumb decision and our beloved Vols football team get STUCK with a bad coach and recruiter for another 3 to 5 years or much longer.

If that happens I won't live long enough to see my Vols play in another SEC Championship game again.

As pathetic as our Defense has been all year we were still ONLY 10 big scoring PLAYS away from being the SEC East Champions and only being a 1 loss team.

Keeping Dooley one more year is NEVER the correct option!

That's your opinion but may not be the opinion of AD Hart my friend.

Sad that you would choose to have maybe 3 to 5 more bad years or longer than to have just 1 more potentially bad year and then get the true HOMERUN hire that could maybe get lots of the top recruits alot more interested in coming to Tennessee.

I would NEVER willingly choose to be a middle of the road or a bad team for 3 to 5 years when it could only be just 1 year but that's your decision.

How do you know that the hiring condition will be any better next year? You just assume so? We've had three bad years under Dooley. You need a 4th? A 5th? A 6th? I don't see the logic. The inability to get a "home run" hire will not increase if Dooley does his usual performance one more year.

In no way was this meant to be a retain Dooley thread. The question was about what would be better for the program...

Settling for someone halfway down the list of possible coaches

or

Letting Dooley stay one more year, to prevent from having to hand him 5 mil, and try for a home run next year.

How do I know next year would be better, because there are 4 sec schools looking for a coach this year, and that is very unlikely next year.

My point is that the person hired as the next coach at Tennessee, will decide our fate for at least the next decade, probably longer. I personally am willing to wait for the right person. Gruden, I'm looking at you with one piece of advise... keep the wife happy!!! GBO VFL

If we consider Kentucky a threat to the Coach we want, we are along way from where this program should be and we should clean house in the AD immediately. I can see no logic in keeping Dooley one more year. Of course, the world does appear to be upside down right now, so I guess logic or reasoning means nothing anyway.

And I see no logic in just firing him to go out and get Kirby Smart... so I guess we are even. It's home run or bust... and bust could put the final nail in what use to be one of the best football schools in the country.

I couldn't say it better...

It is never good to lose. I never pull for the Vols to lose. If UT is 6-6 and the powers that be believe they can get the right guy then Dooley is gone. If they don't feel they can upgrade then it gets more complicated.

And before ignorant posters jump on this post and say "It can't get any worse"... it can. Hiring an equally bad coach would be "worse" because you'd have another 3 years in purgatory while he got his chance. Hiring a somewhat better coach is also worse. You only change if you KNOW you have a guy who can raise the program. Otherwise, suffer another year and try to find that guy next fall.

This isn't the gratification most here want... especially those who are personally offended that Dooley coach poorly and so find it necessary to attack him in hateful ways rather than just dealing objectively with his failures as a coach. But the truth is that the wrong move can have longer, more damaging consequences than keeping Dooley while looking for the right guy.

This is the nature of the coaching carousel. Notre Dame took a spin. Davie, Willingham, and Weis all looked like great hires... Willingham and Weis were considered definite upgrades. They hired and fired 3 guys after Holtz... and while he's having a good year this year... Kelly isn't out of the woods there yet. USC went through an extended period of frustration before Carroll arrived. Texas had a long drought. Nebraska had a long drought. Miami has been down for years while trying different coaches.

No matter how optimistic you are that one guy or another is the answer... there's NO guarantee that he is. Dooley needs to be fired. He has not proven he can coach on gameday well enough to compete in the SEC much less win championships. But UT needs to hire the right guy or the process just repeats itself...

I agree. Our average margin we have lost by is 11.833 ppg. thats only cause of the bama game. Other than that its been way close.

Prior to the Miss State game I would have agreed with you. At that point, I'd talked myself into the fact that we'd possibly be undefeated if we had any defense at all - we had a shot in every game.

Not anymore. We lost to Miss State and Missouri, and we got embarrassed by Troy. I feel that all of these teams are less talented than this UT squad. I was willing to be patient as long as we beat the teams we should beat, but we haven't done that this year.

It's time for Dooley to go. I respect what he did here - the VFL program in particular is something to be proud of. But we need somebody to land these bigtime recruits, not just get our hat on the table at the announcement. And once they're here, we need coaches who can turn their talent into wins. I feel that Dooley cannot do this.

I like your intentions, but I disagree.

We're Tennessee. The great Tennessee. I, for one, have had enough of unproven, 'experiment' head coaches. Stoops is a great defensive coordinator, but it's time we get a proven HEAD coach in here. Someone who has had previous success as a HEAD football coach.

You know what I'm saying?
