See 3rd & 16 against MSU. Waggner in coverage. Got beat. We were up 7-3 and could have went up 14-3. Different game. See Teague on all 3 scores he gave up against Florida (and caused Randolph to get hurt on the last one). He is the edge of the defense. That is as important as the safety. He gave it up all three times. 27 yard run. 80 yard run. 75 yard pass. ALL TD's. See AJ not covering his pass routes last year, see him not doing it this year. Lathers sucks in coverage too. Byron Moore is horrible at safety. He has blown WAY too many coverages. He has missed 7 picks that should be gimmes for a safety. We had better defensive end play last year. They are not really getting anything from anyone consistently when you really look at it. Guys might have 12 tackles but that is misleading. 3 and 4 and you give up a seven yard run, who cares if you rack up tackles? Why weren't the players this bad last year, then? We have the same guys who have an additional year under their belts, and arguably more talent in some positions What's changed?
These guys are consistently out of position and are getting burned almost every single time. You're right in saying the players need to execute - but what if they're not being taught to execute correctly? You don't just become the statistically worst defense in America because the players aren't doing their jobs. They're not doing their jobs because they don't know what their jobs are, and it shows. See: 4th and 12, 4th quarter, Missouri
Sunseri plays a post safety defense. Whether in 3/4 or 4/3. It is man to man. Blow a gap, lose contain, or blow a gap at the same time contain is lost and you will give up a score. Long scores depending on field position. Wicox played a different style. These same players that sucked last year are still sucking this year. In the Wilcox defense you just die slower. But we still died. The constant is the players. And our record in big games.
Dooley is out & Sal is out. Delusional to argue otherwise. But these players are equally at fault. You can't hide ability. If you can play, you can play. A coach can't keep you from looking across the line of scrimmage and seeing your man and guarding him. I won't buy that one. That is on the player. All day. People sure as hell have not left JH & CP open. Why do we?
