Just to clarify: The LVs beat FL

We are shooting 35 % from 3 . That is not a bad percentage. and Mercedes is having First team sec numbers

According to the announcers, the LV'S were LAST in the SEC in 3 point shooting before last night's game. and for Mercedes, I actually thought she may be ill because her performance last night was subpar to many of her previous games this season. Her rebounding was virtually non existent, her shot was off, her defense was not great, and letting midgets block her shot ( because somehow, in 4 years in this program, she continues to briing the ball down to her defender's waist), she did barely enough to beat a team that had 1 single win in SEC play! On 2 or 3 occasions last night, she could have gone straight up with the ball and scored. She instead either brought the ball down or dribbled once before shooting. I'm concerned with the inability of the staff to teach fundamental basketball! This should not be happening in her 4th year in the program. I want Mercedes to be the BEST player she can be, because I actually like her and think she has tremendous upside in her game!

I was wondering what was up with Mercedes too, this wasn't her usual good game, hopefully she can get over it,the last thing this teams is a dose of the crud that is going around

Middleton finally got into the game, which is a good thing

Nared looked a little flat at times

DD did well, hopefully she will improve her consistency

thank goodness that Reynolds came back into the game,an injury is the last thing the Lady Vols need right now, with there thin bench

but it was a good win

as all ways Go Lady Vols :clapping:

Nared played for the entire 40 minutes.

so? http://www.volnation.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=13516303

there were plenty breaks in the action, she should be in the prime of her athletic life. 40 minutes should be next to nothing for her.

soccer plays 45 minute halves' almost non stop

geeeeee, sorry.

I should have wasted more of everyone's time.
Her STATS weren't stellar, but she contributed. I was unable to watch the live feed, but felt that her STATS were not what kept her in the game.............

so, they just kept her in because she could stay????

or maybe those other dimensions.!.!?

sorry I didn't contribute without extra details

Yes, with a short bench (constituted by role players who can only do certain things), there is definitely that limitation. If Holly had Cooper available, then Reynolds could, for example, be deployed in different ways but as it stands, Holly does not have that many options on the bench.

Its interesting that Holly gets criticized when she doesn't substitute and also when she does. Just up thread people are complaining that she always breaks the team's momentum by bringing in the subs and of course, when she doesn't, that to breaks the team's momentum.

As a different view, I will give Holly credit for understanding her team dynamics. When the game gets stressed, you want players who have potential to make big plays (and Jamie and Diamond are the main threats there) and it I believe it helps the other players keep their composure to know that they have Nared on the floor. She, Mercedes, and Diamond are the security blankets that give everyone else confidence that they can weather the storm. Of those three, I think Nared is perhaps the most comforting of the three because she is generally the most consistent player and keeps an even keel under pressure.

it would be great to have Cooper ready to play,I've thought for a long time, that the Lady Vols haven't kept enough players on the bench

a couple of more players would have gone a long way as to giving the starters a break, they have looked tired at times this year

It had it's hiccups but above all else they played to win!

I have a whole new perspective on the game after watching it a 2nd time. What was I thinking the 1st go round.

I'm sorry to all if I came across like an old sour puss. I have a change of heart the game had lots of good moments.

Like Diamond jetting in from the wing to make an acrobatic under the rim layup. Or when she went coast to coast a couple of times. And hitting those sweet midrange shots of hers is a joy to watch!

Diamonds are Forever, indeed.

What can one say about Jaime Nared? She has a listlessness (is that a word) about her. But she seems to hit big shot after big shot! The girl had ICE in Her VeinS~

And Jordan Reynolds is a Trooper. Give the girl Brownie points for shaking off that ankle injury to rejoin her Lady VOls.

J.R. finally gets it, too. For a big guard she can score in the paint by attacking the rim and scoring on jumpers! Reynolds had one fast move thru the lane weaving thru her defenders for a layup! y'aall know how bad she's at making those. But she made it that time & it was a sweet move by her. :clapping:

After further review - Yes - Mercedes was getting mugged by those Gators. They were munching on her and the referees couldn't give two cents about it Boy were they terrible. :glare:
Refs 1 Cedes 0 Game over for Russell.

MeMe Jackson has become a compliment to our Big 3. She's getting better and she's a very heady player. I enjoyed watching her and Alexa Middleton play.

Ok Alexa. That's my girl and I mean to her. I apologize she's a Tennessee Lady Vol all the way. Alexa has a little bit of Shanna Zolman and Kelly Jolly to her game. She's a good shooter. She had some bumps to start the game but she turned the corner and was fantastic!

Shaquilla 'Qui' Nunn played only 7 good minutes. I'm really liking her game. Now she knows how to rebound! Elbows high! She's gaining a reputation with those rebounding moves...

All in all I give the team an A+ They WON!
Thanks Lady Vols!
And good luck against South Carolina.

Our starting 5 is top 5 talent, nationally. You couldn't name more than, what, three, programs that have more talent/higher rated prospects in their starting 5. The problem is that we are not well coached, we are erratic and we underachieve. On the one hand, the game is about winning and losing--but it is also about whether your team is playing to its potential game in and game out. That of course we don't do. That is why we lose games and why many of the games we win are tighter than they should be. We should have won last night's game by 30. We had a 17 point lead in the first quarter, but then we always fall into long stretches when we play dumb basketball, lose leads, fall behind.

That's been the difference between us and UConn for 10+ years. They don't have lapses. If, for example, you run a pick and roll, and picker rolls off and is open, UConn will get the ball to her 8 out of 10 times. We will get it to the open screener 4/5 times, maybe. Look at the play when Reynolds was fallen on and seemed to hurt her ankle. Russell set a pick for her, rolled and was wide open, and Reynolds did not make the pass; she gets double teamed, held ball and we lose possession. We miss passes into Russell in the low post REGULARLY. She establishes fantastic position, and our winger, often Nared or DD or Middleton, will look and then not get Russell the ball. Or she will think about it and then try to make the pass too late, missing the moment when you need to make the pass. Kara Lawson mentioned this issue when talking about us in a televised game a week or so ago. Little things. Should Russell be chasing her mark--opposing center--all of the court, leaving the paint open for opposing wingers and guards to drive to the basket? I don't think so, unless her opposing big proves she can make outside shots--and yet Russell does this all the time. We've got a talented bunch, we should have no more than a couple of losses, but you gotta play fundamentally sound BB consistently--not half the time. We're making progress, getting better, but have to keep improving the mental side of the game.

You touched on a lot of good points. With that being said the team must be commended for battling back to win by double figures. Florida battled tough but the LVs were a lot more athletic and had better shooters. Everybody played well but Diamond and Jaime were the most dominate.

It's the being let down part what puts a chill on the board. If they can only learn from your points. They need more wins and less losses for sure if they want to salvage their SEC season. If they win out?

We're back in the game!

wow just seen a Fla player drag her shoe across Nuns face while she was on the floor

Yeah I saw that too! At first I thought I was seeing things. But that was a nasty move from the Florida player. Who was that? It appeared that she did it on purpose but I could be wrong. Either way I didn't like that and I'm sure Qui didn't like it either. :nono:

I feel the same way about Nared. She was vital in our S16 comeback against Gonzaga in 2015, and also made the winning jumper vs Notre Dame this season.

I believe that is an astute observation. Holly is trying to give rest to players when she can but there are dynamics in play that prevent her from doing so. Nared is an important cog in the machine and she brings a skill set that is hard to substitute for. I also agree that the mental part of having her on the floor is important especially when the other team is making a run. Having the best players on the floor is the best way to weather that scenario.

That's the really sad part of women's college basketball. I've seen this for a couple of decades and have to wonder why it cannot be fixed. Certain teams are allowed to play a certain way. Fouls that are called on one team are not called on another. It's one thing to get home cooking but most of these referee teams are just bad for both sides. Some used to be pretty good and have gone downhill while others were bad to begin with and have not improved.
