Posted via VolNation Mobilewhen i was an undergrad the rumor going around campus about the cause of espn's hatred of ut was that it all stemmed from that gameday commercial in the late 90's or early 2000's (not sure) that depicted a morbidly obese hillbilly woman in an orange smock chasing her pet pig, rocky top, out of an elevator and into the espn lobby. the student body apparently took offense to the ad and pelted the gameday crew with bottles and trash the next time they came to campus...don't know how true the pelting is, but the commercial is real (and pretty funny).
Seriously guys I've never posted a comment or even stated a comment in person about ESPN hating us but I've got to admit something seems to be up. I really think something happened sometime somewhere and we don't have the best relationship. I'm not one for conspiracys but it's almost everytime they mention us they screw our logo up or something along those lines. Could be nothing and probably a guy doing it on purpose. Who knows.
When you call UT's fanbase "trailer park trash" that usually tends to not only rub people the wrong way... but stick in the back of their minds for a very long time.
Or you could remember all the positive publicity that espn give UT. For example, there there were 3 campus's in all of college football that had live coverage on signing day this year and UT was one of them. That kind of love doesn't seem like hate to me. You?
I'm just playing devil's advocate... I am not one who says that ESPN has it in for UT. But, I would think that the signing day coverage was more due to all the craziness surrounding the program. Kiffin signs, angers the world, steals Janzen, Nuke, and Bryce on signing day last year, looks to be lining up a top 5 class this year, then bolts for USC. It could be that we were simply one of the more interesting stories to cover, which equals ratings. I could be wrong though. . .
On a side note, is the fat lady with the Rocky Top pig commercial real? Is the Game Day staff pelting real?
