I never thought I would do this but have to agree with Bruin here. Whether the word Covid is used or not, the NCAA wouldn’t have expanded the roster size otherwise. It’s clear Duke has a personal involvement in this situation and is showing himself as a consequence.

Bruin is wrong on other levels. There were 16 freshmen on the spring roster. 11 or 12 out of 16 is a high percentage returning. As preacher man so aptly put it, many are choosing to leave on their own and others are being helped out for non athletic reasons such as not putting in the level of work required or being bad teammates (I won’t go into detail).

For those leaving for athletic reasons, what does a coach do when a kid looks great in high school and gets to campus and can’t throw a strike to save his life for instance? The coach helps him find a place where he better fits in. This staff is big on helping kids find a place rather than cutting them lose like other programs do. We like to make assumptions without knowing all the details, which sometimes are kept quiet for the kids best interest.

I also notice Duke didn’t elaborate when pteacherman asked if the money was taken or if he was just told what his role would be this year. I wonder why…

Awfully late in the game to be finding a new place to go.

Agree completely. This is one of the unfortunate consequences of MLB moving the draft so late. Coaches don’t know what they have or don’t have to offer until players and teams make their decisions. Players getting the COVID year didn’t help this either.

Because I have no idea the answer.

The NCAA was not REQUIRED to expand roster sizes because of COVID. They chose to.

I knew this would be a BruinVol post as it began to digress. I know exactly where he stands and why. We do agree on most things the difference is I believe that is where college baseball has gone and to compete you have to play on a level playing field. .

I agree preacherman but shame on college baseball for making that the case.

Instead of making things better the ncaa has made things worse in the regard.

the question is simple. Would the product we see on the field be any worse if the ncaa and college baseball kept players to develop them instead of divorces 2/3 of one class after less than 2 years in the program?? The Answer is easy. The product would be just the same

The NCAA made a horrible decision to expand roster sizes and grant an extra year of eligibility. The root cause of the decision really isn't important. .

Agreed the ncaa made a horrible decision

Without Covid they couldn’t have made such a dumbass decision

Ok I was reading the JC press online and it had a baseball article. It mentioned Meredith. Read through the thread is Meredith going to TN or somewhere else.

Watch: Doughboys submerged by River Riders

DOUGHBOYs SUPERLATIVES
Noah Rosato cranked a home run in the bottom of the second inning. Hall added a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
Backus had three hits for the Doughboys while JR Renwick joined Rosato in the home run club with a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Goolsby and Jake Edwards each had two hits.
Former University High standout Kaleb Meredith had a pitching gem amongst all the run-scoring damage. He worked three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and recording eight of his nine outs by way of strikeout. He walked one.
