Kamado Joe & Big Green Egg

Thanks Skin. I have been thinking about buying one of those, wasn't sure they would do a good job. I think I will pick one up now.

Inflation has hit, at least at our Home Depot . They are now $80.

i like it b/c its so easy. Ive customized mine a bit. Added crushed bricks to the lava rocks and have a tin pan that holds my Jack Daniel wood chips. Water into the pan with some rosemary and you are good to go. I smoke turkeys, ribs, pork butt, salmon etc etc

You didn't answer the question about whether a Big Green Egg performs better than its far cheaper competitor.

Some people are about style. Others are about substance.

Never used the other. I like the egg, use it for everything. It performs above my expectations and I love it.

I've found I don't use my BGE very often. One reason is that I'm single and when I do a smoke I end up with a too much food unless I'm doing a cookout.

As was mentioned, I don't bother for steak - 1) my gas grill gets to 550 which is plenty and at the temp a decent steak only takes 10 minutes max. No need to light up and manage the BGE for that and 2) I feel the smoke of the wood charcoal puts too much smoke flavor into steak.

Agree it is good for chicken, poultry in general. Great smoker - I've made some awesome pulled pork and it was very simple.

Because I don't use it often I find the charcoal left over can get damp and sometimes unusable so there's not much savings there.

Bottomline - for me it's only used when I'm doing at least an hour cook. For all else I use the Weber gas grill (which is worth every penny and IS superior to cheaper competition)

Had a bge, it cracked. I now have the acorn by Char-griller. Paid 240$. It cooks the same as the bge. I can't tell a difference.

I have cooked on both, and I totally agree. Who gives a crap if it isn't green?

As to charcoal cost...you can get a huge bag of quality lump for $20. Close the vents and it can be reused. I've probably bought 8-10 bags in 2 years, and I grill a lot.

$100 of charcoal a year is a lot, muchless $500. Even if it was an exaggeration, it is pretty assinine to use cost savings from charcoal as a justification to pay $400-500 more for one grill over another. How many years would it take for you to breakeven on that initial Green Egg investment if the difference in charcoal is $40-50 per year?

Gas isn't free, IIRC it's about $20 to exchange or fill a propane tank but I'm unsure about the price of natural gas.

Personally, I couldn't justify the $1K investment in an Egg, that's why I went with a different kamado-style grill at 20% of the cost.

I wish I had taken a pic of the pork tenderloin I grilled last night. Best I've ever had.

I probably spend $150 a year on charcoal but I use my BGE on average about 4 times per week.

I agree on the weber for a gas grill..Our's is 14 years old, and we use it on average 2-3 times a week, and still going strong...I have replaced the flavorizer bars, and igniter...

Always kept it covered on the patio, so it still in great shape

I use my acorn that much.
Tonight I made burgers with the charcoal that was left from last time. But $150 sounds about right.

I was in the Home Depot about a month ago and they had some lump (Tru Cue) on clearance for $1.98 per 8.8 lb. bad. It's not the best stuff out there but for the price you can't beat it.

I bought about 20 bags.

Thinking about buying one for father in law. What did the op go w?

Will your FIL know the difference? If he doesn't cook a lot, don't waste the money on a BGE. If he likes to cook and will use it often, get the BGE.

He is into cooking and pretty good. Just one of those guys who never wants to spend money on himself.

I'm interested also. I really need to pick up a new grill soon. Costco has a similiar version which is red, I forget what it's called though.

I'm telling you, that Kamado Kooker I referenced earlier is a great venture into fantastic charcoal grilling without killing your bank account. I'm going on my 3rd year with it, still love it. Picked up for $190 @ Kroger, end of season special. I noticed they have it again this summer, I think it's around $280.
