Ken Pom SEC Tournament Chances

Does anyone know if the selection committee will look at Ken Pom or Sagarin or BPI when it comes to selecting the field or do they really mostly look at RPI rankings?

We don't know what other computer rankings, if any, and to what extent, the Committee uses.

The NCAA's bracketing principles and procedures say this: "Among the resources available to the committee
are complete box scores, game summaries and
notes, pertinent information submitted on a
team’s behalf by its conference, various
computer rankings
, injury reports, head-to-head
results, chronological results, Division I results,
non-conference results, home, away and neutral
results, rankings, polls and the NABC regional
advisory committee rankings."

Somethign else not mentioned from Ken Pom

"Forida was one of three conference unbeatens, to go with Stephen F. Austin and Wichita State, and not surprisingly the Gators are favored to win the SEC tournament. But how can we not devote most of the words here to Tennessee, the ultimate paradox in basketball?

John Calipari should know that if I had my way, the Vols would be the most analyzed team in the history of the game. In SEC play they had the best per-possession numbers on both offense and defense among schools not located in Florida. A decent share of those good numbers was piled up in mauling of fellow conference opponents. Only one of Tennessee’s 11 SEC wins was by single-digits, and only one of their seven conference losses was by double-digits. The Vols have won their last three by a combined 93 points.

Yet people are so down on Tennessee that they’re not even a lock for the NCAA tournament at this moment. However, people are high on Tennessee when defending Wichita State’s schedule. See, the defenders say, Tennessee is so good they beat Virginia by over 30 points. But people are down on Tennessee when criticizing Wichita State’s schedule, too. See, the critics say, Tennessee got swept by lowly Texas A&M. There are a lot of contradictory signals here.

With Bruce Pearl’s show cause penalty set to expire in August, most Vols fans seem to want their coach fired, so they wouldn’t mind an early loss here which might send Tennessee to the NIT. As for me, I’d welcome either a deep run in the tournament or a trip to the NIT. The former would be another example about how we all suck at evaluating coaches. The latter could lead to an NIT champ being rated higher than the NCAA champ. Those two possibilities may be the only way Tennessee could top a very unusual regular season.

I want to make another comment on this. LOL at the bolded. It's as if he's already covering for the real possibility of a team from a major conference being ranked well inside his Top 20 and not making the Dance.

Now, if we make the tournament and pull off a storybook run in it, these rankings will come out smelling like roses, and Ken Pom will be able to point at where he had us. But, I still think it's craziness to have us there. Ken Pom's rankings must be placing a ton of weight on points scored and allowed per possession, relative to the weight being placed on wins and losses. And, that's the problem right there. His commentary points out that we fattened up our offensive and defensive stats in a handful of awesome performances. To me, actually winning games is more important than stats.

KenPom's ratings have had us pretty high for most of the year. I'm not surprised his system gives UT such a good chance to win the SECT.

Granted, I don't agree with his system, because we're probably going to win one game and get put out by UF, but it's interesting nonetheless.

His system isn't perfect, but overall it's the best one out there. Some years have team that he admits are overrated in his system. Wisconsin, notoriously, for years.

But he currently has us 2nd in the SEC to Florida. The way the teams are playing right now, it's hard to disagree

This. We are playing better than anyone not named Florida in the SEC.

That's arguable, we're 6-4 in the last 10 games. Georgia is 8-2 and so is Arkansas in the last 10.

People have stars in their eyes because we blew out a few teams in the last three games.

What if you go back to 11, or shorten it to 9, why 10? We have won 4 in a row, something neither of them can say.

Shorten it to 9 or lengthen it to 11 and they've got a better record than Tennessee over the stretch.

Over the last month both have played better than we have.

Two weeks ago we were finishing up a 1-3 stretch and even the most ardent Cuonzoners had begun the bailing process.

My point was you can lengthen or shorten it to fit any team probably....over the last 4 we are playing better than either.

Which is why I said it was arguable that we were playing better than anyone besides Florida. We've had a slightly above .500 last month of the season.
