Those of you who don't know who he is, an assistant coach on the staff and is the all time scoring leader in SIU history...

A few interesting notes I'll share those who are interested and my have missed it:

-went to length to talk about Trae Golden at PG and a few different things. He did make a statement pretty much saying, we know the PG position is a position of need right now and we are out there looking. He was then asked so if your able to find someone would you move trae to SG his natural position as many are asking about? His reply was no. What you have to remember is that this is traes first year playing PG. he is probably playing way too many minutes right now but that's what is needed of him. It's a good thing for trae though to get those minutes because it'll only help in his progressions. If we're able to bring someone in you'd like for trae to play the point still and get some minutes at the 2 as well. Sound like their ideal situation would be to take some of the load off golden and probably give him say 20 minutes at point and 10 at shooting guard. This would keep him fresher down he stretch and Wouk probably improve our defense some as well as offense.

This was straight from kent Williams mouth, I am paraphrasing these arent exact quotes fwiw but pretty close. Sounds to me like the staff isn't very confident in washpun or Stanton and is looking, my guess is juco, at formidable pg's who could be a backup next year. Sounds though like this staff is confident in trae's ability to continue to progress as a PG and expect him to be the starting PG next year.

Just figured I'd add, I have been saying this or awhile. To hear a coach say it though brings a little more validation to my point though.

On another note he talked about how funny CCM is and how much fun that the staff has.

They might have some confidence in Stanton, but he can't play till Jan 2013, so I'm sure they are looking for immediate help. Ever since Stokes joined the team, I have been saying that this team is a solid true point guard away from being a pretty good tournament team.

As far as Stanton Williams int even mention him once, I would be Avery surprised if he's a major contributor next year IMO. It would definitely help with backing up golden and letting him play the 2 some. Playing the 2 just even 10 minutes gives him a break on defense and just save his legs a bit I think for the final minutes of the game. I don't see the staff bringing in a hs PG though, I fully expect it to be juco if they go after one.

That's good... It does seem like trae is a lot more turnover prone at the end of games.. I guess he gets a little sloppy playing so many mins.

we don't have another scholly to sign a point guard next year. the 2 players we lose, we already have filled with the 2 new guys coming next year. someone would have to transfer out. i don't see that happening. (mcrae) ? i don't think so. we are stuck at point till 2013.

There is usually a player or two that move on for various reasons. I am sure CCM knows who that might be.

Maybe Washpun or Miller move on? Im not sure if Miller would even be eligible to move on or if he would have to sit out, but those two would be my guess

Miller could technically go into a grad program and immediately be eligible to transfer into another DI program. He redshirted his first year and played his second year at Pitt. He spent 1 year in JUCO and now this year at UT. He is a bright student who could probably graduate this spring or summer. That would open up a scholarship immediately.

yes obviously we only have 2 scholarships for next year, and those are both taken. the fact though that a member of the coaching staff has come out and said they are looking at pg's means to me atleast 1 person is leaving in the off-season. my opinions on how we gain this scholarship in order of likeliness:

1. Miller graduates this summer and thus is eligible to transfer to another program(that offers a degree UT doesnt) and can play immediately. To me this seems like the best option for both parties, miller gets PT and UT gets a scholarship. Obviously, this is contingent on Miller being on track to graduate this summer.

2. Washpun is asked to leave. I really didnt see this as being much of a possibility up until about a week ago. The fact he has gotten 0 minutes since SEC play started is really speaking volumes for what CCM is seeing from him. Then today with the statements by Williams that the staff knows the PG position is one of need really made me rethink the Washpun situation.

3. Mcbee is asked to give up his scholarship. He was originally a walk on and gained a scholarship because we happened to have an extra. I understand he is deserving of a scholarship and that he gives is all i am in no way questioning that. i am assuming Skylar is a good student, and being from Tennessee will qualify for multiple scholarships that would probably cover just about all of his expenses.

My guess is Miller is gone but that is JMO, clearly though i think the staff is planning on having an extra scholarship to give out next year from the way Williams talked.

All viable options, I really just have a hard time seeing number 3 happening. If he did that would be awesome, I just don't see it.

No way is McBee taken off scholarship. He's averaging 6.2 points a game and is playing 19 minutes/gm. He's playing tons of minutes (pretty well I might add). No current player is going to be taken off scholly. Won't and shouldn't happen. That's very John Calipari.

will it happen? no probably not. is it possible? yes. skylar came in as a walk-on and was only given a scholarship when there was an extra, he was never promised a scholarship. he also wouldnt be the only decent player to play d1 ball and be a walk on, you realize that right? Now, im not saying its going to happen, i simply was stating that it is a possibility which it absolutely is.

I get that he wouldn't be the first contributing walk-on in D1, but he'd be one of the only ones I'd ever heard of to earn a scholarship, then have it taken away despite solid play.

interesting. Even if we open a spot up, who do u take?? I'm not aware of any upgrades on the juco level and im guessing it's to late to get in the game for a hs pg. We aren't in a position to settle for a washpun upgrade / project to back up golden and we have a decent guard coming in '13 so im with the masses in saying we are stuck with golden.

Its a bit of a unique situation because of him being a home state kid and being from tennessee. i seem to remember hearing somewhere that he would qualify for the hope scholarship, or maybe he did qualify his freshman year that may have been it. so its not like your putting him out there to dry if he can gain enough scholarships so it evens out in the long run. with that said i dont see it happening i was just simply putting it out there as a possibility.

shocked would not even begin to describe my reaction if we were to bring in a hs pg. as you said we are looking for an upgrade over washpun as a backup apparently, how many freshman pg are left out there that fit this mold. then even if you do find one you deal with the fact you will have golden, washpun, ?, and landry all on scholarship as PG for '13 season, IMO that is just way too many and is taking away from the '13 class. with that said though even bringing in a juco player takes away from our available scholarships for '13. IMO you dont bring in another PG unless more than 1 guy leaves the program, or if you simply get the opportunity at a stud PG and cant pass it up. i really think we need the 4 scholarships for the '13 class at a minimum with the talent that we are in on, it has the potential to be a program changing class.

Not too mention we are in it for Charles Mitchell (although I don't think he is as high priority with Stokes next year).

i have absolutely no insight on this sort of thing so dont hold me to this just doing some research. i was going through the very limited juco information available and seeing what may be out there that we could be interested in...

came across this kid colby carr. he is a sophomore for coffeyville community college(can anyone tell me why this school sounds familiar, former player or something?) so he should be leaving after this year. here is the scout on him in 09 by espn...

May, 2009: Carr leads the charge through his defensive efforts, playing an intense, ball-hawking style of defense. He excels as an on-ball defender, pressuring opposing guards into fatigue, frustration, and turnovers. Carr can also do damage on the boards, using his effort and good athleticism to crash the boards on both ends of the floor. He can also connect on mid-range jumpers off the dribble, but he needs to continue to develop his consistency from the perimeter as well as keep improving his range on his jumper. He also has excellent leadership skills and plays hard whenever he steps on the floor.May, 2009: Carr leads the charge through his defensive efforts, playing an intense, ball-hawking style of defense. his current juco stats...8 points 3 rebounds 4.5 ast 2.5 to 1.5 steal

edit: he signed and played with ULM out of high school.

yea i found it interesting there was no mention by williams about a post. i know that they can not directly name a recruit by name, but from what he was saying was very convincing if they have a spot it would be used on a pg, if they found one.

heres a guy i would love to add from the sounds of it. drimir ferguson. he was a 2* pg coming out of high school in the bronx, ny. here is his write up in the media guide after his freshman year...

In his freshman year, Drimir proved that he could be a first-rate point guard on a championship team. A second-team Region XV all-star, his 7.48 apg put him at seventh in the nation. Drimir is a savvy point guard, with a NYC basketball pedigree. With his solid mid-range jumper, wide court vision, and burst-of-lightning moves, he has the kind of skills that make him the quintessential point guard. Coach Brustad expects that in his sophomore year, Drimir will be able to raise his game to the next level, having 33-games of college basketball and a national tournament under his belt.

Drimir was the high school senior class president and the captain of his high school team, a Bronx powerhouse. He was an All-City player, ranked in the city’s top 50 players. He averaged 13 ppg, 4 apg, and 2 spg in high school.

currently his juco team is ranked 5th in the country, here are his current stats to date this season...

30min 11ppg 4rbp 6.5ast 2t.o 2.5st 78%ft 35%3pt

i dont know about the competition but they are #5 in the polls currently and won the juco championship last year with ferguson leading the way as a freshman pg.
