That is why I chuckle at the SEC pundits saying what an awesome job Stoops/Gran did of saving their season while having to play a 3rd string QB. Please; and Sawyer Smith was healthy by at least UK's game with UT. Stoops continued playing Bowden at QB because he realized Bowden was much more dynamic than Smith despite his lack of consistency as a passing threat (Bowden was a HS QB anyway from his soph through sr seasons).
Gran basically ran Bowden in a hybrid veer/triple option attack ala GT, one, because he knew SEC East defenses would not be prepared for it, and two, he prefers a strictly ground game anyway because of his conservative approach to the game. Stoops' philosophy has always been a conservative offense coupled with a stingy defense, so when Smith was injured, he moved Bowden from WR to QB rather than insert his actual 3rd string QB, I suspect he did so knowing he could have a dynamic ground attack. He didn't do it out of desperation; he did it because it was the best option to fit Stoops' philosophy.
