That was the other one that makes me nuts!
accept - a verb meaning that you take something given to you: “I accept that as a Tennessee fan, there will be times of sadness and frustration ahead.”
except - used to show that something is not included or different: “Nothing can be more frustrating than being a Vol fan, except being an Auburn fan.”
effect - a noun meaning a result of something that happened: “The effect of living through multiple coaching searches is that I believe nothing at all, and my liver is shot to hell.”
affect - a verb showing that one thing caused a separate reaction: “The effect (that’s the noun) of living through multiple coaching searches is they have affected (that’s the verb) my belief in a rational universe, and in addition, my liver has been affected in an unfortunate way.”
(“Affect” can also be used as a noun in psychiatric/ mental heath settings to describe the expression and emotion on a patient’s face. The first syllable is accented, sort of like “AFF-lack!!” “After years of Tennessee Vols coaching searches, the patient displays a blank affect and is uncommunicative.” But let’s don’t go there.)
ETA: sorry all, it’s been a long day...
