Kentuky/UT Matchup just got more favorable

Well, the discussion was that Cal would miss him due to his shooting. You indicated that Cal would just coach up other players and would not miss him. Exactly what did you mean? Perhaps I just can't understand your intent that appeared to clearly indicate he could coach up others to assume the shooting role on the team.

I'm saying that maybe some incoming players can fill the void of shooting. He had the athleticism to fit in on defense was lazy. He did bring energy to the team, though and length. We'll see if that can be replaced.

When it's all said and done, he wasn't going to be a starter, though.

Shooting is something that UK needs, but Miller is better anyway. Of course depth will be an issue, maybe they'll get something out of Hood. Poole can hit at times and suck at others.

I think that's probably debatable. Miller is a fair shooter; I've heard several UK fans act as if Dodson is a great shooter that just had an off year. I think this is a significant loss considering the change in the roster this year from a bruising interior team to more of a finesse team. This UK team needs some shooters, and Dodson would have been a pretty decent one.

I don't think its debatable who the better player is. Miller's skill-set is much broader, and polished. Dodson cannot put it on the floor with any success, and he is a defensive liability for the most part. His lateral movement is painful to watch. Miller does all of it well, and has the ability to do some of it great.

Miller has a better mid-range game with the floater in the arsenal, but there is no debate whatsoever who the better shooter is (from 3 point range). Both are set shooters, but Dodson has a much quicker release that looks natural. Miller's shot is similar to a pitcher that has to wind up, and if rushed the shot is usually off. Dodson was very streaky last year, but he is a natural shooter.

All in all, UK is losing a shooter, which they do need. It would be stupid to say that we do not need shooters. However, its still not that big of a loss because just like last year Dodson will not see over 6-9 minutes per game because of his lack of skill putting it on the floor and his poor defense. Jon Hood is also a shooter, who will unfortunately play the same role again this year.

this is a big loss for kentucky. To think that kentuckys freshmen are going to come in and pick up right where those guys left off last yr is delusional. They will miss dodson.

On a team that will play the DDM 100% of the time this year rather than 15%, a 10mpg/6ppg player with no handles and bad defense is not going to be missed that much. I'm fine with saying its a loss, but "big loss" and "really miss him" are statements that are grossly overstated.

It really isn't that hard to replace a kid that gave you 6 pts. per game. With the studs that have been brought in, he likely will not be missed at all.

Then I guess Miller wouldn't be hard to replace either. He only averaged 6.5 ppg.

Dodson will be missed because KY's biggest weakness is going to be lack of experience. Now they have only 2 guys who have played -- Miller is the best, but Dodson was more productive than Liggins and Dodson was a shooter. If KY is going to run the DDM offense, they need shooters, otherwise, the result is the same when Calipari faced the Vols at Memphis. A lot of bricks because we run a zone that shuts down the DDM.

KY's other big weakness is lack of interior play. I don't think the FL wash-up transfer helps that much and Kanter may not be eligible. If Kanter isn't eligible, KY isn't going to be real good. Even if Kanter is eligible, if you are relying upon one proven solid SEC player (Miller) and a bunch of true freshmen, there is absolutely zero margin for error. KY will have to have Kanter, Knight, Jones, Lamb, and Poole to all meet expectations. If any of them have the type of year Vargas had his freshman season at FL and KY is looking at 3rd in the SEC East at best.

The difference between KY last year and KY this year is that everyone in the country could look at Wall and Cousins last year and know they were going to be studs from day one. There may have been questions marks on Orton and Bledsoe, but Wall, Cousins and Patterson were all locks to have all-SEC seasons. There isn't a single player on KY's team this year that is -- not even Miller, who I like a lot.

Miller is solid, no doubt. However, I think UK needs a shooter that opposing teams legitimately have to respect to make the DDM work well. Dodson was by no means a great player, but I think he might have been a more important cog than Miller will be in making that offense be as good as it can be.

I would be real happy if these UT football/Kentucky basketball fans would just go ahead and reveal their allegiances for the upcoming season. Those are the worst kind of people. I have been a UT fan since I was born in 78. You can't be a fan of UT in one sport, and a fan of another team in another. The true part of being a fan, is that you cheer for your team when they win, and when they lose. The biggest loser fan (currently) is the Alabama football/ KY basketball fan. YOU guys are setting a great example for your children. There is no way to experience true fan joy if you are one of these bandwagon jumping losers. Please don't set next to me at the Tommy Bowl this year, if you were a KY bball fan last year, because you guys are going down.

Way to be open to the opinions of others, lol.

What is a Butler basketball fan supposed to do for the next 4 months? It IS possible to enjoy watching a certain program's sport, even if you prefer another team in other sports. Holding it to a standard, sir, is the worst kind of thing to do.

Liggins is easily better than Dodson...

UK is allowed to practice 10 hours per week right now, to prepare for their trip to Canada to play Windsor and a few other universities. Although I don't place much value on off-season reports, there are multiple people (trusted) reporting back that Liggins is stepping into a new role in full stride. For the first time, he looks comfortable on the court in all phases of the game, and is most certainly the most improved player on this team.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see him in the starting line-up, but at the least he is the 1st player off the bench, averaging 20+ minutes per game. I think he will have a solid season.

He was considered a highly rated recruit, so he should be able to contribute by now.

He was considered a highly rated recruit, so he should be able to contribute by now.

Normally, that would be 100% accurate. In this kids case though, its kind of a different dynamic. The kids academics were horrible, his ACT scores were atrocious and his overall comprehension just a little slow. Couple that with a year under the Gillispie regime, which was renowned for destroying several of the players psyche, caused a bit of a setback.

Last year was really his first year of really getting to play ball, IMO.

Darius Miller on the other hand has no excuse. This is his time to either make the leap or remain a timid ball player that doesn't use his talents. Its sink or swim.
