Rivals250 quarterback
Kevin Newsome has wrapped up his season at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy. Rivals caught up with the 6-foot-3, 217-pounder to find out about his experience playing at Hargrave and the latest on his recruiting including his narrowed list of colleges.
Newsome confirmed he's down to Ohio State, Penn State, Virginia Tech and Boston College."Oh man, Hargrave was a great experience," he said. "I learned a lot under Coach Prunty. The physical and mental aspect of the game of football I appreciate everything Hargrave has done for me. It was a blessing to go there and I'm glad I went. At times it was tough, but I had to hang in there and it made me tougher. Right now I'm in class, studying and that is going well. That experience has helped me with my responsibility and discipline."
Where did Newsome improve his game this season?
"I believe I improved in everything," he stated. "I know I'm not Peyton Manning or anything, but I think I'm doing pretty well. I learned a lot. Sometimes I had bad games, but sometimes I had good games too. Real quarterbacks are ones that are going to get back up and be ready to fight in the next game and I learned that."
Now, the four-star prospect has made his way to Portsmouth (Va.) Churchland to join his brother at school.
"I just transferred to Churchland," he said. "Tuesday was my first day.
"It's nice being back home. A lot of people are happy I'm back home. I'm happy to be home. It's just a short period of time to be with my family, but my objective was to come back home, graduate early and then go play football."
Was that correct, that Newsome wants to enroll at his college choice in January?
"Yeah that's pretty new," he said. "I do want to enroll in January. It's a thought that I've been thinking about the past four years. It's a new thought to actually do it. My family and I just up and decided."
The No. 7 prospect in Virginia has confirmed with all four of his finalists his intentions to graduate early.
"I have informed Ohio State, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Penn State," he said. "Those are my top four. All of those schools are tops in the country. They are pretty high standard where I can get a good degree, especially a business degree, that's first.
"All of them are great football programs too. Virginia Tech is doing pretty well, so is Boston College and both of them are good quarterback situations. Ohio State and Penn State have quarterbacks I wouldn't mind sitting under and learning from as I get older. Every school I'm looking at right now has different positives. Right now I'm trying to decide which one has the most positives."
Newsome has already visited Boston College at the beginning of the month and plans to make his way to Ohio State this weekend for his second official.
"Then I'm heading to Penn State on December 5th and I'm trying to get one planned to Virginia Tech. I believe that's going to be my last visit," he said. "I plan to announce my decision at the Army All-American game."
A lot will happen between now and early January. What does Newsome want to see on these trips?
"I just want to see the environment," he said. "I'm not worried about the academic standpoint because I already know they are good. I want to get a feel for the environment, team and coaches and everything in that aspect. I'm just weighing my options."
Newsome confirmed he plans to still announce at the Army All-American game.Rumors have swirled that Penn State and Virginia Tech may have the advantage. Is that fair?
"That's a fair statement for Penn State and Virginia Tech," he said. "You are keeping out Boston College who is there too.
"Right now Virginia Tech is going to have a head start since they have been recruiting me since ninth grade. They are my home state school.
"Penn State is doing very well and that gives them a head start.
"Boston College with Coach Jags and Coach Logan, they are known for great quarterbacks and they have their own head start too. All of those are tremendous and I love every one of them. I wish I was three players so I could go to all three schools. The advantage those three have is because I've been to them. I haven't been to Ohio State."
One thing Virginia Tech may have going for them is Newsome's contact with Tech commitment and five-star athlete Logan Thomas.
"Logan Thomas is a good friend and I talk to him on occasion."
Does Newsome talk to other recruits from his other finalists?
"I talk to, that's about it," he said. "I have talked to one of the linemen from Penn State and some of the guys from Boston College. I haven't really talked to anyone from Ohio State.
"All the players and prospects I've talked to are pretty honest. They are obviously biased because they want me to come to their school, but they aren't lying to me about playing time or anything like that.
"Most of the schools I've talked to are saying it's most likely that I'll redshirt and learn the system, then when I'm ready to contribute to the team the best I can, I will."
