Personally, I think parts of all these arguments are true.

1) I do not think Steele is an elite DC. Solid, but not elite. However, there are only a handful of elite DCs.
2) Steele does have some recruiting chops, especially in the SEC, which is always a plus with regards to Saban.
3) I do not believe Steele was among Saban's top choices.
4) The pool of people who want to undergo the pressure and grind required in organizations like Alabama and Georgia may not be as large as one would normally think in spite of the assembled talent they would coach, hence the fall to Steele as the hire.
5) May be wrong, but something seems a little off in Tuscaloosa. The 2022 team was loaded and struggled. Yes, a few points and they're undefeated, or a few points the other way and they would have sported four losses. They just did not seem to jell as a team.

Anyway, my $.02. I will agree with it is not a bad thing for the Vols, but the only DC hire that would be bad for Tennessee is if Smart decides to go back to Alabama as DC. Heupel will hang points on them. Lots of points I think and Saban will be big mad.

Honestly, there is something awry at Bama. If you think this is the direction that Saban wanted to go then you're not aware of the college landscape of coaches. Or, if this is the direction Saban wanted to go (this would be really interesting) then he is stuck in a way that benefits everyone in the SEC. Either way, this is a win for UT. Steele is not a good hire for Bama. I think that Saban reached out to other DC's, and I'm not sure that Bama is able to just get what they want anymore. Other programs are winning and having fun in the process. In short...nobody wants to work for him anymore...there are other paths now to making it in college football.

Steele needed one year to be vested in the State of Alabama retirement system.
Buddy Little Nicky just helping out Steele.
Conehead will set up the defensive schemes.
Steele call plays.
Conehead penalties will be announced by NCAA on August 1.
Conehead DC after NCAA clears and Steele retires.

Why would the NCAA clear Pruitt? He’s admitted to handing cash to multiple players.

Good news for UT. He has a history of subpar defenses. I love how the Bama pundits are having to explain why this is not a bad thing.

You can't seriously expect Pruitt will get just a 1 year show cause.

Mullen got 1 year for meeting a prospect along with his coach. Bruce Pearl got 3 years for a cookout and then lying about it.

Pruitt has admitted he personally handed cash to players/families while his wife and staff also passed out up to $60k in cash to players/recruits/families.

The only thing better than having a 70 year old on recruiting trail for Bama, is having two seventy year old guys.

Plus, the OC is young enough to be their grandson. No chemistry there between the three generals.

All the Huntsville gang wanted Cornbread back for that job....despite his heading into NCAA jail.

This hire of Kevin Steele will lead to the final demise of Saban.

Mullen's show cause was a slap on the wrist. He didn't miss a single second of on-field coaching.

See that’s one avenue this could go down….

Get what you get from Steele. He won’t be great but he won’t be bad or bad enough to be terminated.

Wait out the AA and see what they do to balding. If it’s short term they’ll work something out and they’ll get him in a year or 2.

If not they’ll be right back here looking for another coach because Steele will walk away at some point.

As much as I’d like to see Saban get a few more losses on his resume this smells of a plan that’s in the works one way or another.

I just can’t see Steele being his first and only call.

Not wrong. Saban fired the guy. The. Dabo fired him. Both went on to MUCH better situations. Any UT fanwho isn’t excited for this hire doesn’t know football. I have zero fear that Steele will be able to slow down Heupel’s offense.

Doesn't matter. While Pruitt was stupid, sloppy, and careless, if he'd just waited two years he could have had his buddy at the local Chevy dealership pay the players and it would have been completely legal. Pruitt's going to get sanctions because a message has to be sent. But they aren't going to be massive.

The Huntsville gang here is reporting that Steele is just a one-year temp deal. Cornbread will be the official DC by this time in 2024.

I can kinda see that plan by Saban. For whatever reasons that Tennessee didn't ever witness, Bama loves the Pruitt defense system.
