Kevin Sumlin? Overrated?

So, to be straight, we can't criticize our own coach after a losing season but it's perfectly okay to smacktalk the coach of another SEC team that at least had a winning season. I'm sure TAMU would have loved to have us on their schedule. They would have stomped a mudhole in us.

Where did I say the UT coaching staff goes without criticism?

You completely misunderstood.

Wouldn't say he's overrated. Just that his team lacks any semblance of a defense. If Sumlin and Muschamp were to combine forces, A&M would immediately turn into a superpower.

Sorry he lost to every ranked team he played this season. Any other coach would be called overrated.

Yeah, I think it basically has to do with just HOW GREAT everyone thinks he is. I think he's a really good coach, but he's not the best around. He has access to great talent and aTm has stepped over Texas as the place Texas recruits want to go (SEC team v Big whatever). He should probably have been more competitive this year. The SEC is a grind though, so time will tell. I'm not sure they will be in the top half of the West next year if Johnny Football goes pro.

Weezer, this was Sumlin's 3rd year at A&M. I think CBJ will be fair game after his third year. I think it's assinine to criticize our coaches this year (except for the fake punt against Vandy LOL). :good!:

Doubt their defense will stay bad. They've recruited extremely well the last couple of years.

Pretty sure it's just his 2nd year. They cleaned house before coming to the SEC.

No way Sumlin's worth $5 million/year.

Texas A&M the latest school to go over the deep end over one good season.

You think you've been doing something illegal...little champion?...Go ahead...criticize your little head off....we're not really paying attention

Let's see - people thought they would suck last year and they surprised everyone. Had a season this year as good or better than what people thought they would have last year and now he's overrated?

The fans they be fickle.

Our coach lost to every ranked team we played but one, and an unranked one, so by that logic, he is even more overrated, yes?

This is your logic pattern- If A=C and B=D then A must equal D. I'm not sure that is very sound?

Jones beat a ranked team, Sumlin didn't. Sumlin has a much better team than Jones does. Oh and the transitive property doesn't work.

I think you read the pattern too quickly LOL. It's a total break in the logic pattern based on totally different equations that he assumed were equal. I was just messin' with him though, It's actually a very common theme here haha!

Might want to be careful going down that path.

What do you mean?

I'm not saying Sumlin's a bad coach...it's just that I'm not convinced he's a great coach. He's been successful with players he largely hasn't recruited at Houston and A&M. How many games does A&M win over the last 2 years with an average QB?

He has been blessed to have 2 great college QBs at Houston and A&M....that I do know. In turn...is it his coaching that has made those 2 QBs look great or have they made him look great as a coach?
You can't teach what Johnny has..."instinct". He's a backyard baller, that's "talent on loan from God".

Briles and Montgomery coached Case up.

I'm not sure he's overrated. He made a few bad play calls Saturday, and he has been blessed with exceptional qb's during his head coaching tenure. All of that is valid.

Agree…but he will need to put some real emphasis on the defensive side of the ball in the off season.

In reality, the off field stuff probably affected A&M quite a bit this year. I thought Sumlin did a decent job handling all of that BS.

Sumlin is a good, maybe even great, offensive coach. But part of being a head coach is managing your staff. If he doesn't make wholesale changes to fix that defense, then he is failing at a crucial part of his job description.

You're absolutely correct bamawriter. The defense needs to be fixed. The recruits they have coming are fine, but you have to coach up that talent. If not, the old excuse "well, we're young" will be echoed to enternity. Coach em up. No excuses.
