1. Limit the turnovers
They had 13 against Kennesaw State. Not bad, but considering the pace of the game, plus the opponent, this number needs to limit, especially when later in the game UT got sloppy.
A problem I had was post turnovers. Hall/Stokes had five turnovers. That's a little too much. They need to protect the ball better.
Tennessee is going to slow the game down for the tournament. This means every offensive possession is highly important and needs to get a shot/free throw attempt every time. The good news that in 40 minutes, Golden and Moore only had two.
2. Fouls
Tennessee fouled WAY too much Friday night. UT has a short rotation. Seven guys had 13+ minutes. That means UT needs to make sure they don't cheap fouls with lame hand checks, bad charge takes, and to go after ball first.
Kennesaw State had 25 attempts from the line. That's too much. I thought UT's interior defense was weak and late to help. The latter part basically asks for fouling players.
3. Better pick and roll play
I'm not sure what it was, but Golden looked out of sync on pick and roll opportunities. It seems him and the posts (Jarnell and Kenny) just couldn't get an easy basket from it.
UT went to it a decent amount. While Golden did a nice job driving and dishing, I think the pick and roll game can be a vital part of the UT attack in this offense. I'm curious to see Thursday's game how UT does with it.
4. Rebounding
I thought this was the scariest part of the first game. This is where the team really misses Maymon. Hall is not a good rebounder, and Stokes struggles to control the boards without help (as do a lot of guys). And when the next post player is 6'5/205, it's going to cause problems.
Part of UT's lack of rebounding was bad defensive rotation. However, I just didn't see crashing either. I saw a lot of standing around, which was disappointing.
If UT doesn't rebound, they could even lose the first game. Giving up 15 offensive rebounds is inexcusable.
5. The bench
The bench played well the other night. I liked what I saw from Moore and McRae. Chievous was solid (although is rebounding has to improve).
You have three games in four days. You need to bench to be good. If they aren't, UT will not accomplish much in Puerto Rico.
