Keys to upsetting #1 Alabama this weekend.

the Vols have been making a lot of penalties the last couple of games, they will have to stop that this coming weekend

More, not "a lot".

UT has committed more penalties against better teams and definitely needs to fix that.

Interesting enough, UT leads the SEC with the fewest penalty yds and is 2nd in most penalty yds by opponents. You can make infer coaching from those two facts.

The thing I think I like best is that they have taught the Vols to avoid targeting penalties. They hit below the neck with their head up then shoot their hips through and wrap up.

1) Our line play on both sides of the ball has to be strong. Our OL and our DL have to impose themselves on bama--which in practice means that we have to run the ball well and stop the run. That is usually the key against bama and will be especially so this week. They are mostly a power running team--and our strength is running the ball. Running the ball/stopping the run--who is the most physical team: that's where the game will be decided.

2) First down is crucial. More particularly, our offense has to be productivity on first down--which means making at least four yards. We'll have to throw the ball on first and complete some passes to keep the pink elephants off balance, so they are not playing the run every first down. If they are stuffing our first-down runs, it will be a long afternoon. Equally, we have to keep bama from making more than 5 yards on first down. First down is HUGE in football.

3) TOs: We need to get at least two turnovers in this game, and maybe three.

There is your recipe for victory.

Hey I think if we score more points than they do we will win

Not if it is sent up to the SEC offices for review.

There is one thing you can count on for this game. The SEC wants to see a team in the NC game and Bama is the favorite.

This will be like a challenger fighting the heavyweight boxing champ. You can't let it go to the "judges" and you better expect the "champ" to get favorable rulings from the officials.

Officials are human beings. They know how great Bama has been. They EXPECT Bama to be great. No human being looks at anything through an unbiased worldview lens... including football officials.

And... both conference officials and game officials LIKE the SEC's run of NC participants and champs. Bama is the one SEC team with a shot that would likely not lose badly to FSU, Oregon, or even tOSU.

Good post.

Bama running at UT's DL and AJ is probably a good thing for UT. Seems UT struggles most when teams run around them.

On your point #2, I think making 1st downs is the biggest thing for the O. Three and outs will turn this game early against UT.
