Kiffin and Speed

Gerald Jones had a step on his defender down the field on Saturday, however Crompton under threw him and ended up getting intercepted.

Gerald also had a step on his guy in the end zone but Crompton hesitated and ended up throwing it too late. Jones wound up with it out of bounds.

We had receivers wide open against UCLA, however Crompton didn't see them.

We have speed. What we don't have is a compitent quarterback and talent/depth on the O-line.

For the most part - the receivers did a bad job, against UCLA, of getting seperation. There were plays were there were some open guys - but WR is not one of strong points.

Crompton's issues are well documented but that doesn't mean you should just make sh*t up. Jones was not open initially as the defender was between him and Crompton until Jones came back to Crompton. Unfortunately Jones stepped out of bounds. That one was on Jones.

We don't have speed like you think dude. What may be fast to you is average to others. Fulmer thought Gerald Jones was fast. We all know that's not true.

I think his first priority in looking for playmakers out wide was to look for size and toughness. Kiffin loves a complete receiver in the 6'3" or taller mold. I think he wants to complement that with speed in the slot and out of the backfield.

Wide receivers open against ucla did us zero good...line couldnt hold blocks long enough to even get good throws off.

we dont have a brandon james or a percy harvin. thats the kind of speed and elusiveness id like to see.

Those guys don't come along that often...and i think nuke has the elusiveness...he just has to mature...

Meline is a legit burner in this class...

Let's face it, we need some speed on the edges. Saying Crompton missed WR because they had a "step" is not enough. We need receivers running past dbs in their back pedal, right now most of our WRs are possession receivers, with maybe the exception of DM. If we can develop MT and Nuke we may have some deep threats but right now we don't. If the line can't block and give Crompton lanes to through down then we might as well run the wing T and have MH, BB, DO, and TP in the game and let the teams pick their poison, bench crompton and let BB handle the snaps. We can call it the Wild Bill formation.

lets not kid ourselves. in 2007 Erik Ainge threw for 3,500 yds, 31TDs, 10 INTs - 1,000yds to Lucas Taylor, 600 to Roger, 500 to Briscoe (all these guys where first year starters). Those weren't speed guys or even highly regarded guys. The next year With the same group of receivers (+ a more mature Gerald Jones), same 5 OL men, same running backs, (the entire offense returned) Crompton throws for 800yds 4TDs, 5INts and nobody catch for more than 330 yds. It ain't about speed. Its about the QB folks. Gerald Jones (Rivals 100, highly rated 4 star), Brandon Warren (5 star), Nuke (4 star rivals 100), Teague (4 star), D. Moore (the fastest?) - we have a better receivers for Crompton than Ainge had in his senior year.

Again, we don't have talent problem, we have QB problem.

Any other WR barring maybe Moore would have caught that.

Yeah, anyone could have caught it had they been where the safety was (10 yards down field behind Jones). Randy Moss couldn't have caught that pass unless he was jumping off of Gerald Jones' shoulders.

The safety dove down to pick that ball off. Jones shouldn't have been playing that game period.

I agree we have a QB problem (that goes without saying) but we could use some more speed. I really wish we had a couple of speedy receivers that where big and physical, and could go up and take the ball away from the defender....we have missed having that since James Banks, and even Kelly Washington. I know neither panned out,but they had all the physical tools. In my mind this coaching staff would've keep those 2 in check.

I've gotta agree with Lockdown1 on this one.

I'd love to see what Florida's great D would have done if they were threatened by a breakaway threat on the edges.

the whole new OC thing didn't help much either. Clawson was not very good.

Their QB is 7th in the country in passing yards
Their WR is leading the country in receptions and is 10th in yards

That pass would have hit Moss in the head. You need to look at that play again.
