Bama has had two 3rd down conversions via penatly thru 5 games. That ties them for last in the conference. But please, tell me more about these drive extending penalties.

Where are you seeing these penalty statistics?

Is there a link? How do you know that 3rd down penalty extending drives that Bama is tied for last in the conference?

I keep a database so I can write about the games without having to memorize everything. I import the official play-by-plays. This is obviously not an official stat, but I'm sure someone out in internet-land keeps track of similar items.

They don't that I can find. Because I would love to look at some of these penalty statistics.

You import play-by-play drive charts for every single team for every single game every single weekend? That must be some database if you have penalty extending 3rd down drives ranked by conference team ready at a moments notice. Who is first and how many do they have? In fact, what is the complete ranking and number of 3rd down penalties that extended drives for all 14 conference teams?

Bama is tied with Vandy. I'll get you the others when I'm back in front of my PC.

And it's not really that huge. I just keep a tab for each team.

It's amazing to me how the best conference in sports can have such terrible officiating that never seems to improve. And I say this every year but as bad as the football officiating is, the basketball officiating is worse. Granted, there are technically no "SEC" officials in basketball but we see the same faces each year and the same idiots who never improve, and the SEC (and college basketball in general) does nothing about it. Same with football, nothing is ever done to make it better (at least that the public can see) and on top of that they are protected from almost all criticism and accountibility.
Basketball officiating is worse and easier to criticize purely because of the volume of calls.

A big part of the reason officiating seems to be getting worse is that every single game is televised live, is in HD, and every questionable call is able to be dissected immediately on social media. There is a gigantic spotlight that exists now to shine on these calls that didn't exist before. There are certain teams that seem to get the benefit of the doubt more often than others on questionable calls, but most of the time the call is right.

One has to wonder if the majority of the calls are right what is the probability that the same team benefit from back-to-back wrong calls in consecutive weeks that directly affected the final score and allowed them to win.

Where do you import the drive charts from? Is there an accessible database website?

I'm an AP member, so I get it from their system.

If you are looking for something free, Cfbstats.com has a format that is really easy to copy and paste into excel, though they don't keep drive charts. ESPN's play-by-play format is easy to browse, but not exportable to the best of my knowledge.

I'd say that's pretty low, but bound to eventually happen in a sport with 120+ teams and the volume of calls. The Cubs didn't win a WS for 108 years for the same reason - sheer odds; it has to happen to someone.

The real inexcusable missed calls are the ones that are missed upon review, like you said earlier. They were kind of handcuffed on the Bo Nix backwards spike because of how it was ruled on the field, but there really isn't an excuse for missing the contact with the ball on the kickoff. I totally understand missing that live, but on replay the guy's pinkie finger clearly gets bent back by the ball as it passed by - how do you miss that when you can slow down the video and have a few minutes to look at it?

The returner immediately reacted as if the ball had hit him. It makes no sense to say "there's nothing there; no need to even review."

Not only that, but isn't it possible for the video guy to look at the ESPN replay on TV before he even buzzes the officials to look at it? I would hope that they do that if possible - get a quick initial look, then decide if you want to formally do the review.

I mean, I was watching the game on TV already buzzed on my couch, and as the ball bounced by him I immediately remark to my wife "Did that ball touch him? I bet they review that." How in the hell does the side judge down on the field not have that same thought?

So you are saying Kiffin/Ole Miss should report the SEC to the Health Department?

Exactly. Kiffin/Ole Miss should have all the right in the world to report the SEC to the Health Department. In all seriousness, it's just a joke that Kiffin is getting fined for freedom of speech and calling out someone for not doing their job properly. That's all there is to it at the end of the day

Freedom of speech is not freedom of consequence.

My issue isn't so much that I think one side gets favortism, though I do think college basketball is probably the worst where officials are influenced by the home crowd. My issue is that college basketball officiating is incredibly inconsistent. Officials will change their flow in the game, they will go from letting them play to calling it close and vice versea. A guy will drive in and get mauled and no call, 2 drives later the defender breathes on him and it's a foul. It's incredibly hard for teams to get into a rhythm.

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech.

Lol exactly.

Kiffin signed a contract. He signed away certain rights about certain things. He can quit coaching tomorrow and say whatever the hell he wants like the rest of us. Until then, he can and will get fined.

However, good for him and hopefully the AD or booster picks up the tab for him. It needed to be said.

Kiffin should have the right to express his opinion... especially when the SEC (or any conference) admits they got wrong. That's on them... not us
