Got a beta test for that theory?
The expectations were set from before Kellie got fired, "he only fires her this season if he's going to hire a proven coach" - multiple Knox connected personalities.
Those expectations continued in the aftermath of her firing:
In theory, they should have underpromised and overdelivered. Now they're battling the expectations of hiring a proven winner, making it incredibly difficult to roll out a "Stephens" type hire without having a lot of fans and media questioning the decision.
Given that, you don't release the info before the most watched moment in women's college basketball history because you don't want the headlines. Those headlines "Can she win at TN" "Can she recruit at TN" "Why did TN not hire a more proven coach" can hurt her ability to come in and immediately recruit from the portal. You do it when you know most folks aren't watching and the negative press is only more localized within the fanbase and region. That's why if we don't hear anything today, I'm moving to >90% certainty that is actually her and will be released tomorrow when less eyes are on the sport.
