not hard to do. We grew up in the same neighborhood. Was a fan of his music from the Real Hostages on to the current stuff.

I'll never forget partying with the Vroys and Todd wearing the WIVK frog head at parties and practices. Ahhhh, college

West Town Mall is always swarmed with cars on the weekend. Dunno how you can claim that Knoxville people aren't going to malls. They're just going to the better mall.

I've eaten lunch at the food court a hundred times in the last 10 years. Never once felt threatened, never saw gang activity, never saw a crime committed unless smoking next to the entrance is a crime.

There is a police precinct there. Gangs would be obliterated if they tried anything.

Even though it's "East Town Mall", it's nothing like East Knoxville/Cherry Street/Magnolia Avenue.

Magnolia scares the yuppies in Knoxville. A lot of people are missing out on some good pizza cause they think Magnolia is Detroit.

The gang activity was at its peak around 1997-1999. It was also primarily at night. There's a reason there is a police precinct in there. Also, plain clothes officers are usually on sight in the mall. They were the first to respond to the man that was killed working in a clothing store.

I wouldn't wander around, alone after dark all about Magnolia. The pizza place near Chilhowee Park is fine at lunch time.

Missing out on Chandler's too if the east side scares them so bad. My mom is like that, she still won't even go downtown and its slammed almost every night.

FWIW, I don't necessarily think malls are dead. Anecdotally, I know a lot of people who are like me and avoid places like Turkey Creek like the plague. I imagine whatever is the next type of shopping development will probably split the difference between the two types of developments, maybe leaning toward a mall.

Lumpy Lambert was on the scene before KPD.

The guy that was the shooter had gang ties. I'm sorry that it wasn't gang related in the strictest terms, but it was a man with gang ties that shot and killed a clerk because he wouldn't allow him to return clothes. And that still doesn't affect the fact that gangs hanging out at the mall and at least one actual gang related shooting occurring in the late 90's is what caused people to stop shopping there.

No, the lack of development east killed that mall. Not one shooting. I would hazard that there are gang members at west town mall these days. The article is about a 42 year old man shooting a store clerk and mentions nothing of gang ties. I seriously doubt the white guy in the pic is a gang member

You'd be correct in your assumption that the white guy isn't a gang member. That's Knox County Commissioner Lumpy Lambert.

That's what I was thinking but the article says the store clerk was shot by a 42 year old. Nothing about gangs

I've already covered that multiple times in this thread. The serious gang stuff happened in the late 90's. There aren't any articles discussing that. It's also around that time the mall had a name change to discourage gang activity and try to change the culture there, but the damage was done.

I've never had a bad experience there, and clearly you haven't either. That doesn't mean it's always been a safe place, because it was pretty bad for a while. It's like swimming in the ocean and claiming there aren't any sharks just because you weren't bitten.

Lol, there was never any heavy gang activity there. I used to hang out there almost every weekend in those years and I never seen a single gang member. The reason they changed the name was because they did heavy renovation in the late 90's. After the renovation was done, they changed the name. I live minutes away and visit there frequently to this day and still, no gang activity. It's always been a safe place, even at night. It was at it's peak when you say the gangs were a problem. If they were to "bring it back to what it used to be" then it would be in that time period. Your first post insinuated that there still is a gang problem and have multiple shootings (which is false). Even if that were the case they would be the dumbest gang in the world considering there is a police facility there. The shoppers started declining in the late 2000's just like every other mall because, you know, the internet and stuff.

As to the shooting you linked. I remember it clearly, and the trial too. The clothing dispute was due to him not being able to return an expensive tailored suit. How many gang member do you know that wear tailored suits?
