Knoxvillians know that soft-bread love in their bones, but nobody seems to know exactly where it comes from

Always.

I guess one reason we didn't get in after that game and the line was so long down the sidewalk is that Pruitt stopped in for a hoagie after the game.
I’m only reading good things about Gus’ online.
One place that pops up a lot is a place called Nixon’s. Any one been there?

When I was at UT in the mid 90s Gus's would deliver in the fort til about 4 in the morning. They used to have this old guy who delivered the food that would beg for beer or weed, and would stay as long as you would let him. Ate many a late night cheeseburger and fried mushrooms from that place. Also my son is a freshman living in massey this year. This is the view from his room.20190817_112431.jpg

Where do you go to get your steamed sandwiches?
Now I have to go to Firehouse Subs, but I do remember those nice steamed sandwiches from Time Out Deli when I worked there in the 70's. Also I would go to Sam and Andy's on
the strip and get their roast beef on dark bread, but Time Out it would always be turkey on white, and both were Great!!

The summer after I graduated HS I worked at Sam & Andy's in Farragut. I cooked more VolBurgers and steamed more sammiches than I can count. The pickles came in 5 gallon buckets and we had to cut them in 1/4's. Mrs. Captain made the sketti sauce every week. It was so good!

I would love to have one of those steamers in my house.

When this quarantine thing hit, I ordered a Gus's t-shirt to help support the cause. I wish I could have a sandwich.

Glad I saw this post.

Both my parents are early-80s UT grads. So they used to go to Gus's sometimes. Well, I started going there too, and order white bread, smoked cheddar, roast beef, and mustard. That's all.

Well dad and I went there once when my parents were visiting. I ordered and my dad looked at me funny, as that's exactly what my dad used to order back when he was in school. Taste is genetic, I guess.

A steamed sandwich food truck might be fun. Maybe I should try it.

Kielbasa and smoked cheddar with brown mustard on dark at Sam & Andy's. Yeah, when your college-aged, foods that shock the taste buds are the thing. Being on a budget, the roommate and I would save our fun money for a Sam & Andy's hoagie and a beer. At the end of the quarter, we would go to the Roman Room and order a cocktail at the bar.

Another thing about Sam & Andy's, the chimneyed charcoal grill near the street front windows. Walking up Cumberland, you espy it and duck in the doors with every intention of spending money you can't spare on a burger, but, you almost always got the hoagie... Once in a blue moon, burger. Oh yeah (then, take a hoagie walkin').

Steamed sandwiches are an abomination just as are hot potato salad, iced coffee, fried cheese, and myriad other edibles that are consumed other than conventionally accepted formats. All such foodstuffs emanate from the gastronomic hellhole that is Yankeedom.

You might be right, but those steamed sandwiches with my dad before UT games are a memory I’ll cherish forever. Until I make it back to Knoxville and have another one I’ll reserve my judgment.

May be yankeedom, I'm a 6th generation Middle Tennessean, 18 ancestors served in the Confederate army, I'm about as southern as they come, but I sure enjoyed the steamed ham and cheese washed down with a few cold PBRs at Sam and Andys when I was at UT in the 70s. I agree on the iced coffee and hot potato salad, uck. But I'm not in to sweet tea either.

Funny you should say that. A package arrived for my son at my house the other day. He just finished his 1st year at ut and inside the package was a gus's t shirt he had ordered!

My cousin is a nurse at UT Med center. He did two rotations on the Covid unit. I was going to buy him a gift certificate but one of his buddies had nominated him and he had won one.
