No it isn’t. A 3-4 DT lines up outside the NT and has different responsibilities. A nose holds up the middle and occupies blockers...a 3-4 DT generates a push to apply pressure and shut down running lanes. The 3-4 DE has run responsibilities but also provides a pass rush. There are DL that can play both schemes, but the types we’re recruiting are more suited to the 3-4.

Yes it is. You’re explaining the same term.

You’re referring to a DE in a 3-4 scheme. The NOSE would only line up “under tackle” (sorry, old term used by Brooks), if it’s a 50 base, or if he’s playing the 1 or 0 tech only. For one, we don’t have the size on D to strictly use a True 1 or 0 tech Nose, and we need the depth.

We are recruiting 3 techniques and also looking for 3-4 DEs that can slide inside when playing Multiple D.

You’re not going to recruit a “specialist” Nose that plays the 0 or 1 technique, so you want kids that can play 3 tech in a 3-4. If you see it as a DT that gets push or a Nose that stuffs, it’s the SAME thing in a 3-4. We just want pocket collapsing and to let our LBS run free. We are looking for Versatile DTs. Pruitt wants DTs that can penetrate and collapse the pocket and run stuff.

Then in passing downs or situations you would have the nose come out and slide a DE inside and move Outside backers down to rush.

This isn’t complicated Butch. I don’t know how you got em mixed up. But hopefully this helps with the understanding a little bit better

I have seen where there is a DT playing in place of the SDE alongside the Nose and WDE playing in a 3-4.

That’s typically how a 3-4 works. I just didn’t know if he was explaining 3, 1, or 0 tech DTs.

In our scheme, Oxendine and NuNu are different creatures. NuNu would man the nose and Oxenendine the DT. When WE throw up a 4 man front it’s just a shift...not a responsibility change. That’s easily seen watching a Patriots or Bammer game for over a decade. I’m not an X’s and O’s tactician and you seem to have your terminology down pat so without personally insulting you (unlike you with the passive aggressive condescension), let’s chalk it up to disagreeing on the subject.

And that’s usually determined on down and distance or if the offense is in certain sets or heavy.

Talent level also is a determining factor as well. I would play a guy like Donald or Watt anywhere on the line.

Brother didn’t mean to come across as arrogant or condescending. In no way was I disrespectful.

I’m not on here enough to recognize peoples football IQ. So perhaps my explanation came across as such. My apologies

Agreed on the disagreement of what a 3-4 consist of.

A 3-4 DT would be a DT in a 4-3...but without identical responsibilities. That’s why the transition from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and vice versa isn’t smooth sailing. It also affects the science of drafting athletes for both. There are LB’s that flourish in the 3-4 but are wasted in a 4-3...and (once again vice versa). Same with safeties. A nickelback doesn’t necessarily seamlessly translate to both schemes either. Strengths in one scheme are exposed in another. And this all reverts back to DL. Derek Barnett is a force as a 4-3 DE. He doesn’t contribute in a 3-4 imo. Some of this is talking about the same thing, a lot of it isn’t.
