I must have misunderstood. I thought we were talking high school only rankings.

I can't link the article because it's an ESPN Insider ($) deal.

Keith Law wrote it, that may mean something to a MLB fan, I don't know jack about pro baseball.

The 25th overall pick slots for 1.75mil. The 60th is 600k. Slot is certainly not what a signee gets but now is followed much closer

I've never understood the "slot" thing, soooooo...I'm out of my depth talkin to you fellas.:)

If you get picked in that range, you can negotiate that the club pays for your education should things not work out right? Maybe other stuff too, performance incentives for instance?

I will try to explain the new draft system the best I can.

MLB has a slot system in place to try to level the playing field in the first 10 rounds. It ranges from 6mil to 125k at the end of the 10th round. Clubs can pay over slot but it comes out of their pool of money. Meaning if they over pay for one pick they can't sign another or have to underpay.

Anybody after the top 10 rounds can only get 100k unless a club is willing to pay a huge fine. I don't think any clubs did that last year. This is a huge help to colleges since they know if a signee is after round 10 then 100k is biggest offer they will receive.

Yes all kids can get their college as part of their contracts. Only the top drafts get incentives in their deals

Not much of a fan of the system, but I'm a bit biased because of the whole Mark Appel situation last year

Colleges have to like it much better. They know what they are up against for the most part. Under the old system a 30th rounder might get 750k from the Yankees to sign just before the first day of class. That had to be torture for college coaches

I guess I wouldn't mind seeing the system in place after the first round. Give MLB teams the chance to do everything they can to sign their 1st round pick

anyone can get incentives in their contracts if they negotiate them and the club agrees.

I hope you mean "advisor." If he has an agent, he'd no longer be eligible to play in the NCAA (and he'd have no leverage in negotiating with an MLB team, either).

Haha. Yep. Its a stupid loophole, but you gotta make sure not to screw up and call your advisor an agent.
