Kyra Elzy Consideration for LV Basketball Coach

We cannot hire another assistant with no head experience. That would be stupid. Elzy was a terrible offensive player when she was on the Vols, fyi. We need another coach emphasizing defense at all costs like a hole in the head. Defense is vital, don't get me wrong--but our crap offense has dragged down the program. The only person who doesn't realize that is Warlick.

Matthew Mitchell, now Kentucky coach, served as a graduate assistant under Pat Summit while Kyra Elzy was a player. Kentucky hired him in 2007 as coach. In 2008, Mitchell brought in Elzy as an assistant coach and later made her associate head coach. He hired her for two things defense and recruiting. The success of the Kentucky team was a large part due to Elzy. Elzy realizes the LV problems, but is powerless to do anything about it.

Well, let's see, by changing the name of the assistant coach and changing a few of the accomplishments, your paragraph would have read like this in 2011:

"Holly Warlick was a three time All-American (1977-1980) and 1980 Olympian. Warlick began her coaching career at Virginia Tech and then Nebraska as associate head coach (1983-85). Then she returned home to UT in 1985 as an assistant coach and later as associate head coach responsible for the defense (not the horrible Pat Summitt offense) and recruiting responsibilities. Why not give her the chance as LV coach? She certainly has the experience and track record to get the LV's back on track again."

How has that worked out?

The point is not to derogate your post but to point out what a crapshoot it is hiring somebody. Warlick arguably had a deeper, better resume than Elzy has. Elzy may make a great head coach someday (I hope she does). But nothing's for certain. And I for one am interested in a coach outside the Pat Summitt tree, for what I think are obvious reasons.

I disagree. Elzy has far more coaching experiences with several different schools steadily rising to better positions with her success at each school...Warlick has only UT and what did she actually do anyhow? Elzy literally "built" the Kentucky defense and recruiting from 2008 until she returned to UT in 2012.

:clapping:Kyra Elzy played on two LV national championship teams (1997-1998) and 4 SEC championship teams (1998-2001). Elzy began her coaching career at Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky (2002-2004), Kansas (2004-2008), and then Kentucky as associate head coach (2010-12). Elzy was responsible for the excellent defense established at Kentucky and responsible for recruiting. Then she returned home to UT as an assistant coach and now as associate head coach responsible for the defense (not the horrible offense) and recruiting responsibilities. Why not give her the chance as LV coach? She certainly has the experience and track record to get the LV back on track again.:clapping:

Let Kyra go prove herself at a small school first as a head coach then we can give her consideration.

Does no one think that Tyler is ready?
I know he is inexperienced but I would be fine with it.

No. It mystifies me why people want to hire someone (even Pat's son) who has a year and a half of head coaching experience and is one game over .500.

As you state, the young man is inexperienced. Let's wait about five years and see what he has accomplished.

Exactly. Time to move past the desire to inbreed and bring in a good coach. Doesn't matter if it's from the UT family or a female. Just bring in the best individual for the job.

Holly isn't going to be fired. We'll limp into tournament and she'll retain her job. Program wil be shambles before change is made.

No he is not ready!!

He barely has an above a .500 record as a HC you would seriously hire him at major University with the expectations of Tennessee??????

I know some will say well his Mom was hired when she was really young! It was a different time back then Women's college basketball was just getting started!

The next head coach should ALREADY have successfull head coaching experience. I don't want to go through this cluster again.

I like Elzy a lot and wouldn't be surprised if she could do a better job right now than Warlick is. But if and when there's an opening, IMO we shouldn't even consider hiring someone who hasn't successfully headed a program somewhere.

If you would like to replace your staff, we at Kentucky would love have Elzy back. She did a great job in recruiting and our guards defense. She would make great HC.

Kyra Elzy, Jolette Law and Dean Lockwood?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Why on Earth would you give the reigns over to Holly's assistants? They need to be fired, too!

What difference are any of them going to make once Holly's gone? Think about it. Are they going to be able to coach Mercedes, Diamond, Te'a into better players? How come they haven't done any those things now?

What about offense? They are just as guilty as Holly. They are assistants to assist the coach in preparing the team for success. They have not done that. They don't have a clue either.

Get rid of them all.

Tennessee needs new blood and a new direction.

Agreed. If you want the same, hire within, if you want a new direction, hire outside!...it's what you do!
