‘23 LA CB Jordan Matthews (Tennessee)

Woodlawn defensive backs coach Jorel Johnson cautions those tempted to read too much into Matthews’ junior statistics or incorrect listings of his height and weight. Johnson notes that opponents rarely targeted Matthews, who had 23 tackles, four pass breakups and one tackle for loss, earning All-Metro and honorable all-state honors in Class 5A.

“People don’t throw his way for a reason,” Johnson said. “They see on film how fast he is and what he is capable of. Yes, he really is a student of the game. It is not unusual for me to get a call or text from him late at night. He is up studying film and he has sees something to point out or ask about. I’ve seen people list him at 6-0, 165 … that was from two years ago. Jordan is bigger and stronger and that makes a difference.”
Woodlawn High cornerback Jordan Matthews commits to Tennessee

Sark and the Longhorns staff wound up whiffing big-time on the highly touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews at the hands of cornerbacks coach Willie Martinez and the Tennessee Volunteers. Matthews announced his commitment to Tennessee over the likes of the Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines on the afternoon of Aug. 15.

This might be one of the biggest shocks of the recruiting cycle thus far for the Longhorns. And it is surely the biggest stunner of any of the recruitments that cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph was involved in for the Longhorns 2023 class. Matthews was one of the clear priority targets of the Longhorns 2023 class heading into the fall. And nearly all indicators pointed to Texas having a pretty heavy lead in the race to land a commitment from Matthews coming out of the weekend.

There wasn’t much in the way of smoke legitimately connecting Matthews to Tennessee on his decision day. But that clearly didn’t stop him from spurning Texas for Tennessee early this week.

"Stunners" like this... get buzz. Buzz is good for recruiting.

There's been so much talk and debate about stars and rankings lately, but here's something that I want everyone to pay attention to..... this class is loaded with speed, length, athleticism, and intelligence. Also, grounded, very high character kids with very supportive families. It may not be a class that wows you with lots of marquee names among recruiting sites, but these coaches have a very clear plan and approach IMO. They know that their greatest strengths as a staff are development, game planning, and creativity. They also know what they've done in their careers with far less gifted players. Don't look at this class on paper (stars), although it still looks pretty damn good on paper. Take time to look at measurables, character, and academic backgrounds. This is a far better class (based on potential) than I think many people realize.

Get Parker and Hobbs for the DL and it's the best class we've had in 15+ years.

They’re filling major positions of need right now and that is what matters most. I think we just need a true interior DL that won’t take years to get to DT size also. Elijah Davis and just 1 of Parker and Hobbs would be fine. Or maybe we go heavy on the DL to move Trevor Duncan to offense. I like the idea of having a guy with DL athleticism at OT. Maybe Roderick Robinson because I’d LOVE to see Stallings end up at LB even though the staff is high on him at RB
