Google says $30K in state and $48K out of state with no aid. A large percentage of these student athletes would qualify for aid.
I’ve read they now include apx $5K for misc since the athletes can’t have a part time job.
Yea, but you have to consider all of the other expenses, too. I usually use this argument when the topic of allowing players to get paid comes up. I am ok with increasing the stipend, but I don’t like the idea of an open market.
There is plenty of value for a player to attend a high level university. Medical expenses (by renowned doctors), nutritionists, tutors, high level coaches, the use of lounges, locker rooms, equipment in addition to the regular expenses for education, food, clothes, room and board, etc. all go into what the school spends. On the football front, medical costs alone have to be pretty high. If you pro rate these out for regular individuals, it adds up quickly. I have previously heard a number north of $100k per year per player.
All of this, along with the intrinsic value of playing every game in front of 100k fans and on national tv, and the value is quite a bit. Zion Williamson is going to make 9 figures partly because he went to Duke. He wasn’t even the highest rated recruit on his team and would not have been the #1 pick out of high school, and Duke gave him a platform that definitely increased his value.
