Baylor was a one and done due to the SEC Big 12 Challenge. Kim was pissed that she had to come to Knoxville.
Stanford, Texas, and Notre Dame are on the schedule.
James Madison, Navy, ETSU, Tennessee State, Appalachian State, Troy and UNC Wilmington are cupcakes, no matter how much Tennessee plays down to their level. And if they do struggle, that's 100% on them because there is no justification for lowly teams like this to be able to compete with Tennessee.
Penn State and Va Tech would be considered cupcakes by most any other Top 25 teams, even if they did beat Tennessee.
Baylor, ND, Texas and Stanford were their only Top 25 OOC opponents. Granted, the SEC schedule brought up their overall SOS, but I thought the OOC was much, much weaker than it has been in the past. Although they played a bunch of top 10 teams, there weren't really any 2nd tier teams in that portion of the schedule for a change.
For the most part last season, the cupcakes were sweet, fluffy and satisfying. But there were 2 that were kind of rancid...
"Cupcake" is relative to time and opponent. Not many years ago Miss St and SC seemed to be competing with each other for cellar supremacy. How things change!
Relatively speaking, we were a cupcake for Baylor last season.
Penn State owns one of the most storied histories in women's basketball. Virginia Tech has beaten us twice in two years. Both compete in major conferences respectively. Evidence does not support that they are "cupcakes". Both are currently weak teams as SC and Miss St were once upon a time.
Scheduling the perceived "cupcakes" (ETSU, TSU, Appy St, UNCW) isn't unlike what all the other schools are doing and have been doing for years. Unfortunately, we have sunk to the level where those opponents are actually decent competition for us. We have to scrap to get a W sometimes against foes like that. That's who we are right now program-wise. Having the best names in the game isn't providing us separation from those Duncan Hines Icing Monsters!
