Lady Vols at Missouri

Wow: the team lost its mojo down the stretch. Lost to a mediocre arkansas team--no hitting--then after a week of rain the Vols lose two of three to Missouri, getting no-hit in one game and giving up 12 runs in the other? Absolutely great season until the end, and the team seemed to fall apart. Time to regroup.

Bottom line is over the past two seasons pitching has choked when championships are on the line. Specifically when zones are not being called the way they would like them its rout city. Happen in Oklahoma City, happened again today. I'm not sure what it is. They are fantastic young ladies--winners in life--but for whatever reason they just seem to not be able to seize the moment when it counts.

That being said were still better than 90% of the teams in NCAA so its important to note that. But in the end this team will go as far as its pitching will take it.

There were some poor coaching decisions that factored into that last loss -- Gabriel being injured didnt give the Renfroes any relief

Does this mean Florida wins the SEC? Or do we tie? Can't find the standing, but we were winning

Gabriel hadn't pitched much even healthy. Anyone besides me notice that since Monica left our pitchers never get better after their freshmen year. May be time for a new pitching coach. JMO.

I think we have the hitting to go all the way--and we'll need to hit big-time because UT's pitching is good but not great. Can't imagine giving up 12 runs. Why not put Tarango in the game? What is Gabriel's injury--and how, since she hasn't pitched in ages, has she?

Florida wins outright because they're 18/24 and we're 16/22. The team did seem to lose a little focus at the end of the regular season but it ain't over till the fat lady sings.

Thats not good news for Gabriel then -- I bet she transfers

I think the Renfroes are tired - notice Missouri didnt even attempt to use their ace - knowing the SEC tournament is coming up

They have thrown less than last year at this time.9 SEC pitchers have thrown more innings than Ellen and 11 have thrown more than Ivy. With the rainouts, the run rules against Ole Miss and the non-conf games Tarango pitched they didn't throw that many innings the last month. They should not be tired.

What time do you think they went to sleep Sat night after pitching in cold weather at night -- then a early day game today -- Didnt see the Missouri ace out there did you ? Your logic is way out in left field. Fact is Weekly should have left Ivy in the game - in the first place --its his loss.

When you have a 19 game winning streak like they did and then it stops then things can go a little off. It is all about psychology. I hope they didn't peak too early.

I don't know what time they went to bed.I know Ellen pitched 7 innings total in games 1 and 2 and she hadn't pitched in a week. Neither should have been tired.

I know just some sarcsam at the poster that claimed our pitchers fizzle out after the freshman season - to bad they didnt just redshirt her

Sarcasm all you want. It's the truth. They have their moments but they haven't improved at all.

Care to elaborate?

I just have no idea how someone can watch senior Ivy Renfroe and say she isn't leaps and bounds better than freshman Ivy Renfroe. Ditto for freshman Ellen Renfroe and junior Ellen Renfroe.

As freshmen, they took the league by storm. Teams didn't have a lot of film and hand't had at-bats against them. As teams have seen them 6, 9 and 12 times, they've been able to hit them more consistently.

But to watch them now and compare them to their freshmen sevles and to say they aren't better in every technical aspect of the game is completely and totally false.

If you look around the game, even the best out there have been more hittable as their careers have gone on and opponents saw them more and more, especially in conference play. Happened to Abbott, Osterman, Lawrie, Fowler, etc. It's happening to Jackie Trainia at Alabama now. She pitched Alabama to a championship last year, but hitters, especially in the SEC have figured her out.

I disagree slightly. Her mechanics may have improved, but her level of success has fallen off since she was a freshman. It was at that point up to her to re-invent herself. That's the part that I haven't seen and really haven't seen from any Tennessee pitchers since Monica Abbott. Some of that blame has to go somewhere other than the kids pitching.

The ability to hit them though doesn't really apply to the high stakes dud performances this year against Missouri and last year in the WCWS. All three games were against unseen opponents and thus work against your argument.
