Years ago, when Tennessee started calling the women's teams, "Lady Vols", I really wasn't that crazy about it. That would have been during the time Holly Warlick played.
However, it slowly grew on me. Especially during the time of the three meeks, and when winning championships was anticipated and expected. It was at that time that the term "Lady" was being used by more and more teams, or at least broadcasters were calling teams that out of habit.
It was a Saturday afternoon that the Lady Vols were playing Vanderbilt that cemented the term for me. Vanderbilts coach wanted it known far and wide his team was not the "Lady Commodores". but just "Commodores". Perhaps the way he worded it did it, or more than likely, it was because he was the Vanderbilt coach. From that moment on, I hoped Tennessee maintained the term, "Lady Vols" forever.
Now that they are phasing it out, it just seems like we are keeping up with Vanderbilt. And that is sentiment is reason enough for me to want it restored ASAP. I don't care if it was a Nike recommendation, or the idea of Hart, Cheek, or whomever. All our Ladies deserve to be called Ladies.
It wasn't a Nike recommendation.
