17 and 2, only game we lost by more than 1 goal was Arkansas. And UT has scored a goal in all 19 games!! Wonder if UT gets a national seed, even with a loss to top 5 Arkansas in the final. GLV!!

No. 10 UT Beats No. 21 Ole Miss, Will Play For SEC Championship Sunday

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – No. 10 UT took down No. 21 Ole Miss in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament on Thursday, winning 3-2 to advance to the SEC Championship game at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.

It marks the Volunteers' first appearance in an SEC Championship game since 2008.

Redshirt-sophomore Jaida Thomas turned in her second multi-goal game in a row for Tennessee (17-2-0) with two on the night. UT's third goal came by way of an own goal. Junior Lindsey Romig minded the net for the full 90 minutes, making three saves.

Foster Channing and Saydie Holland were the goal-scorers for Ole Miss (12-5-3).

"This team just keeps going. I've said it all year, and I'll say it again - they're so darn tough and so darn determined," said Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky. "Ole Miss was good, and the elements were challenging. And giving up the game-tying goal twice was a gut-punch, but as we've done all season, we just got up and kept fighting. This group didn't want the SEC portion of their season to end, and we're elated to be staying in Orange Beach for three more days."

The game stayed largely in the middle of the field for the first 13 minutes with only Ole Miss managing to get a single shot off.

Tennessee got its first quality look in the 14th minute when Taylor Huff ran onto a cross from Thomas and one-touched a rocket from the top of the box that narrowly missed over the top of the goal.

Four minutes later, Thomas got UT on the board, poking a loose ball in from six yards out after Mackenzie George beat two defenders to send the ball in.

Freshman Jenna Chatterton volleyed a corner kick on frame in the 40th minute, but a Rebel defender was there to clear the ball off the goal line.

A minute and a half later, Wrenne French and Abbey Burdette each got a look at the goal off a corner kick, with French's header being cleared and Burdette's shot on the rebound sailing high. Those proved to be UT's last two opportunities of the half, and the Vols took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Ole Miss evened the score 22 seconds into the second half, converting on a PK after a handball on the edge of the box.

Tennessee's first opportunity of the second half came in the 49th minute when Claudia Dipasupil got off a shot from 18 yards out that flew just a couple inches over the crossbar.

Thomas nearly put UT up 2-1 in the 57th minute, beating two defenders to blast one from 20 yards out that was just slightly off target, hitting the outside corner of the net.

The Vols kept the pressure up, with Huff getting to the endline and playing a perfectly placed ball across the face of the goal in the 69th minute, but despite a diving effort, Hannah Zaluski couldn't get a foot on it in time.

A minute later, Thomas scored her second of the game, finding the net off the rebound from a shot by George.

But the Rebels bounced back, leveling the score a second time in the 76th minute when Holland put one away off a cornerkick.

At the 85-minute mark, UT got its third and final goal in the form of an own goal, when Claire Rain played a ball in and Thomas applied pressure to a Rebel defender with her back to the goal inside the eight-yard box, and an errant touch landed the ball in the net.

Tennessee's defense held strong in the closing minutes, not allowing Ole Miss an opportunity to get a shot on goal.


UP NEXT: Tennessee is set to face No. 5 Arkansas in the SEC Championship on Sunday. The game will kick off at 2 p.m. ET and be broadcast on SEC Network.

SEEING DOUBLE: Redshirt-sophomore Jaida Thomas has scored two goals in both SEC Tournament games this season, bringing her total over the last four games to six. There have only been five other occasions when a UT player scored two goals in an SEC Tournament game. She leads the team with 12 goals on the season.

WINNING WAYS: With the win over Ole Miss, UT is just one win away from tying its single-season program record of 18 wins.

UNDEFEATED VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: The win over the #21 Rebels was Tennessee's third win over a ranked opponent this season. To date, the Vols are undefeated when playing Top-25 teams as ranked by the United Soccer Coaches. Previous wins came against #11 Auburn and at #19 South Carolina.

What "loss" are you referencing? There isn't going to be a stinking "loss!" Any team can be beaten on any given Sunday and the big, bad piggies are no exception.

I think the drive, quickness and pace of George and Thomas will cause headaches for their backs. These are not bad matchups. Make them shoot from distance. No free runs into the box. Our defenders need to sleep in and eat their Wheaties on Sunday.

No corners at all cost. Plus last time we let them come to us instead of attacking them early.

Pensky just said the penalty was ridiculous and called the head of officials after the game and they admitted it was a bad call. I did not see this because I started watching a little later in the half, he said they had a ball cross the goal line that should have been reviewed but that same ref said it wasn't even close yet the people in the booth said it should have reviewed.

Set pieces will be trouble, just like they were something to avoid with Ole Miss. But I swear Arkansas looks like the kind of team that can become frustrated if they don't get a freebie early. If Tennessee is to succeed, I don't think they should engage in a track meet with them in a direct, high speed game. Defend the box like terriers, force long range "shots" (aka: turnovers), and look to spring George and her pals on the counter.

I think George is the engine and Thomas, with her unending effort, is the perfect pairing for a player like George.

The ladies need to make sure those two aren't getting mugged. Go Vols!

I'm gonna disagree with you here. I think we should stick to what we have been doing...being super aggressive and keeping the ball on their end attacking and then attacking some more. I think our defenders are capable of helping put on pressure and also getting back to defend against direct counters. What we've been doing ain't broke...and you know what that means. Changing our style isn't likely to bring about a better result than continuing to do what we have been doing. We might want to get Abbey and Claire more involved in the attacks just to add a wrinkle to our offense. JMO :)

do you think george might want to stay for a 5 year or does ut have space for her next year numbers wise. if this is 5 th this year sorry never mind

There's a championship on the line tomorrow!

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL: #10 UT vs. #5 Arkansas

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- No. 10 Tennessee is set to appear in its first SEC Championship since 2008 on Sunday, taking on No. 5 Arkansas in a 2 p.m. ET match that will be televised on SEC Network.

Second-seeded UT (17-2-0, 8-2 SEC) played its way into the finals by beating No. 10 seed Florida and No. 3 seed Ole Miss. In their last outing, the Vols defeated the Rebels 3-2 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Top-seeded Arkansas (16-3-0, 9-1 SEC) took wins over No. 9 seed LSU and No. 5 seed Auburn. The Razorbacks are fresh off a 5-1 rout of the Tigers in the semifinals.

This will be the Vols fourth matchup against an opponent ranked in the Top 25 by the United Soccer Coaches this season. Tennessee is undefeated by ranked opponents thus far, claiming wins against No. 11 Auburn (2-1, 2OT), at No. 19 South Carolina (1-0) and against No. 21 Ole Miss (3-2).

The two teams met earlier this season in the SEC opener when UT fell 3-1 on the road. Tennessee leads Arkansas in the all-time series, 13-6-1. This will be the first SEC Tournament meeting between the two programs.

UP NEXT: The Vols will return to Knoxville and await the results of the NCAA DI Soccer Selection Show on Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Tennessee has appeared in five SEC Championships previously, winning in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2008, and taking runner-up in 2004.

EVERYONE CAN SCORE: With Burdette's first goal of the 2021 campaign against Florida, 15 different Volunteers have now scored at least one goal this season.

BALANCED ATTACK: On the season, four UT players have scored six or more goals - Jaida Thomas (12), Taylor Huff (8), Claudia Dipasupil (7) and Mackenzie George (6).

THOMAS ALWAYS DANGEROUS: Jaida Thomas' 12 goals have been split evenly with six coming in each half. Her fastest goal came 1:39 into the game against FGCU, and she has twice scored in the 89th-minute (Florida and Georgia).

DYNAMIC DUO: Mackenzie George and Jaida Thomas are hitting their stride, having combined for 10 goals over the last five games.
